Yeah, the piece about him today on Golf Central piqued my interest. It will be interesting to see how he makes out. I like the looks of his swing.

I also like the potential to really open up the Japanese market for the PGA. Based on the interview today, Japan really likes this kid. His possible success could potentially open up some doors in the future for the PGA.

I went today to check out the practice round. He had a mob of Japanese press following him. Really the only group with a crowd. As I was leaving he was making his way to the press tent and the medium was running that way too. Pretty big news I guess.

I hope he does well. The "Bashful Prince" is under terrible pressure to perform. That's a lot for a 17 year old to handle. However, if he can win on a pro tour at 15, he should be able to handle wild Japanese expectations.

I see a big difference though between this kid and Ty.

Ryo earned $1,000,000 last year and had multiple wins on the Japanese Tour. Ty didn't have a resume quite like that.

I have a feeling this kid is going to be the real deal.

I agree--his swing is very smooth, and he is in balance. He talks with a great deal of self-confidence, and says that his goal is to win The Masters (someday, not necessarily this year). "The proof is in the pudding", and we will soon see if he lives up to the hype.

I was at the event today and watched him hit a pretty looking, towering fade into the 176y par 3 14th. I'm guessing it was a 6 iron. That was after the really nice approach to a few feet on the 13th. I guess he started feelin'it with his irons...

In person he looks a lot older than 17.

    • Is there a rule against these guys using their phones during rounds? There's no way I could just stand around waiting during these interminably long rounds when I could be watching earwax removal, cyst popping, or ingrown toenail removal videos like I usually do
    • Sorry, I meant Erik. I type faster than I think. 🤷‍♂️
    • I've never had my entire bag walk off before. One time (about 15 years ago) somebody did nick my range finder off my bag. I had a Bushnell Range Finder in the hanging clip-on hard-case thing on my bag. Then at the turn somebody snatched the rangefinder off my golf bag, left that hardcase behind. It happened while me and my group were inside getting hot-dogs and such. I've heard it has happened to others as well. Since then I kept my rangefinder in my golf bag's pouch for it rather than dangling on the bag in the hard case.
    • I disagree on this. Speed training is just moving something fast, it doesn't usually require much loading. This is why when you train for body building or upping your PB's on amount you can lift it doesn't translate to speed. Actuality they can interfere with the adaptation of one another.  Yes, generally weightlifting will improve grip strength. In a lot of cases grip strength is a limiting factor on your PB's on increasing weight. If your hands give out at 300-lb deadlift, but your hamstrings are good for 400-lbs you will never PB. That is why most people use grips when lifting, to eliminate the grip strength issue.  That doesn't necessarily translate to clubhead speed.  There are plenty of golfers, who have never touched a weight, can swing fast. I think grip strength correlates because when they test PGA tour players, they have been hitting golf balls for decades. It's something that gets developed over hours and hours of practice. When the grip strength trend was going on twitter/youtube last year or what not, they tested the grip strength of MMA fighters, many can't crack 120 lbs. They work out way more than me, I crack 125 lbs+ with my off hand. My dominant hand is 165 lbs.  You have high schoolers with 120 mph club head speed, who probably don't have that high grip strength yet.
