I would say that it's only justified by feel. Although they may be geared towards better players, if you hit much better with them and feel a connection, I think that would justify a purchase.

For years I thought that I was not nearly good enough to buy "new technology" clubs. In fact, when I started playing seriously three years ago, I went on eBay and put together a set of Taylor Made Ti Bubble II's figuring that that technology would be more than enough! Then I used my buddies TM Super Quad driver and after a number of expletives, realized that I really COULD take advantage of new age clubs. Last year I sold my Bubble II's and bought Taylor Made CGB Max irons and my own SuperQuad. I improved tremendously, and will do better this year with a potential R9 driver which I'm getting fitted for in a few weeks. At 59 I'll never be a scratch golfer, but I think I can get into single digits!!

I've always played equipment about to my handicap. Except when I was in a rough patch one summer. I bought used Callaway x-14s, big ass irons with a huge forgiving clubface, while i was a 5 handicap. Make the game as easy as possible for you, a lot of it is confidence and that's exactly what the x-14s gave me. I was back at my hogans quickly, which are cavity-esque long irons and forged blade short irons. The cavity/blade mix makes all the sense in the world in my opinion.

I think most double digit handicappers that play blades are tricking themselves a little bit, but confidence and results are what it's about.

Remember to practice from inside 100 yards more than any other part of your game!

A good friend of mine who plays the same irons I do says the same thing. He's said he'd play hot pink balls if they dropped his score by an average of 1 stroke a round.

I play hot pink balls, but only cauise they make me look hella sexy.

(Be Forewarned - The following may be overly saccharin for the uninitiated!!)

Hit the clubs you dream about.

Anything else is a compromise to things that aren't really that important. What other people think is irrelevant. They have made their choices. Make yours.

Be prepared to be frustrated, to hit a few bad shots, and have most of the world cluck their collective tongues. I'm sure they are well-meaning. Their motives are pure, I'm sure. They are probably even correct - in a empirical, Vulcan way.

But they don't know what you know. They don't hear the small voice that speaks to you when to grip "the club" that you can't hear when you grip anything else.

Who knows, you may grow into those clubs that "you are not ready to own". You wouldn't be the first. You may find that they are always too much club for you. But the real question is "what club makes you smile?"

I think you know the answer to your own question. Do what you know you want to do and don't look back for a moment. Good luck.

My equipment consists of a shepherd's crook and a rock, so I'm going to have to say no.

This new golf technology is really goofy to my eyes. I see driver heads the size of pumpkins, ugly irons with soles wider than the ones on my shoes and putters that look like they've been beamed in from Deep Space 9. It must work for a lot of people, but I think I'm looking for something a bit more traditional as I re-enter the game.

I may come around on the giant drivers, but I'm really afraid of hitting two feet behind the ball and snapping that graphite shaft in two. I'm sticking with my old Bullseye putter for this year at least. The irons? After a few practice sessions I have to ask, do they make game improvement irons that correct a hook?

Yes i am good enough to play my own equipment. I dont buy into that forcing yourself to concentrate bullshit by buying blades when you are a 20 handicap. This is garbage, and a waste of anyone's time. If you cant hit the club consistantly than it will not help you. With all of this technology these days...why not take advantage of it?

Some great advice I got on this topic was:

"Can & Can't are both right...only you decide"

I was using Callaway Big Bertha irons when I decided to take lessons to improve my game. Right out of the gate the instructor pointed out I was using the wrong clubs for my swing. See a pro and get the truth rather than thinking or feeling you are using the right/wrong clubs...

Spoken like someone with a long way to go in life.... At least wait until you're 20 before giving out such sage advice. I'm 62 and I've been playing more or less serious golf for more than 30 years.... are you trying to tell me that you know more about my game than I do? That's rich....

Yes, I'm good enough to play my own equipment... in fact, even if I was a professional, I doubt I would play anything much different. It works for me, and I really like every piece of equipment in the bag.

I don't have a problem with people playing blades, but I don't buy into the theory that they will make someone practice better. I don't think someone should be playing blades until they can at least consistently make solid contact with the ball.

I'll be playing these this season and I am going into this year knowing that I will struggle at first.

The clubs are just tools. You swing them, not the other way around. You should play anything that excites you about using them to play and that maximizes the game you already have. With solid fundementals you should be able to play and style of clubhead that you want.

    • Day 16, May 20.  Today, in between Zoom meetings, I spent some time hitting balls in the golf room adjacent to my home office.  As of this writing, I've hit two dozen, all with a 6-iron, with the same slow swing and lifting arms emphasis of my last lesson.
    • I played on Monday at Rancho Park.  I missed the green with my second shot on the long par-4 11th and had 32 yards left to the pin from the rough.  I hit it to 3 feet (in one shot) but I proceeded to three-putt from there.  Just kidding, I made the putt for a par, gaining 0.81 on that hole (total, not with that putt).  But the pitch from 32 yards in the rough to 3 feet gained me 0.79 strokes, my highest gain on any single shot all day.  I think that's a decent way to decide what the shot of the day was for a round that was stroke play but without a competition going on, just out with friends. Other candidates for best shot of that round (both of these gained at least 0.5 strokes compared to 5 handicap) - a "chip" (using a putter) from light rough left of the #7 green, 12 yards from the pin (uphill then downhill, breaking) to under a foot.   And then again, at hole 13, from 18 yards from the pin in the fairway, putt uphill but fairly straight, to two feet.  Amazingly, none of my drives all day really stand out as great and only two as "very good."  Two also stand out as poor.  Yet, that one round, I lost 0.03 strokes driving compared to a 5 handicap baseline.  Small sample size but encouraging.
    • Yay, back at it! Just a short practice session in doors today. Somehow it is 30+ degrees cooler today than it was yesterday. Though, I am not sure I am in for 89 degrees!!!! I probably had heat exhaustion yesterday playing volleyball.  Just getting stretched out today. Getting some feel back. Mostly feeling like the club works down behind and then out to the right as I do my wrist stuff. Just need to do turn and hip stuff better to get a bit more right side forward at impact.
    • I originally got self-fitted, with some Ping Eye 2 Orange Dots. My score dropped ten stokes on 9 holes in our golf league when my partner suggested I do that years ago. When I did that, I googled the chart, not realizing that the chart was the older Ping Eye 2 sizing chart. So it said I was orange dot. Then, recently, I learned that there was an older chart for Ping Eye 2s, so I re-measured, and it appeared I was a red/purple dot. Purples are hard to find, but reds aren't, and I had a credit at PIAS, so I grabbed a set of Ping Eye 2 Plus red dots to try out. There are some differences in the shape of a Plus vs a classic, and the Plus club is about 1/4 to 1/2" longer than the classic clubs (orange and brown, see below). Then, for grins, I bought a set of brown dots from eBay because I wanted to experiment with even flatter lie. Brown dots are very difficult to find. Very rare indeed. I don't want to upgrade to a newer set of clubs without having a fairly good understanding of my fitting/sizing. I have long arms, longer torso, shorter legs (Alpine Man build). And here is what our results look like between the three using some impact tape (7 iron). The red dots do sit upright at address, and I can't see how you would make solid contact with the toe up, but contact at swing does not equate to address, I realize that. But the tape shows red dot hitting mostly off toe. The Orange Dot and Brown Dots are similar. But I think orange dot is also a bit more toe-oriented (there is one mishit on there that looks heel but I recall that as a mishit). The Brown dot seems most proper on the face, albeit slightly more dispersed. I am thinking I want a flatter lier - that I am a Brown Dot and not an Orange Dot. I will hit one more session using a 5 and a 7 to be sure (I had only enough tape for a 7 this time). Thought you guys might find it interesting. The lie angle definitely matters.
