Would You Like the Sandtrap to have a Golf Fitness Forum Section?

I had this idea earlier and wondered if people would like it. I was thinking it would be interesting to have a section specifically for Fitness programs, stretches, and other athletic related things that people do to improve their golf game. Frankly, I'm too cheap to invest in a personal trainer right now, let alone one that knows his golf, so this could be a fun place where we share workout experiences and tips.

So what do you think? Would you use it or would it just be a barren wasteland of a forum section?

Actually I guess it could be argued that the "Swing Tips" section encompasses Golf Fitness already.

I would say yes but hesitantly. I have been through a variety of fitness programs and one actually caused my back injury. Just fair warning.

Frankly, it should be quite useful since most of the golfers I see are out of shape. (Sorry in advance, just an observation)

Just plain funny. We could just say run... a lot to all golfers. That's what a lot of college golf coaches tell the bigger kids on the teams.

walking the course is plenty of excercise for me...wel that and the 12 oz curls all night.

I think it would be a great idea. There's a bunch of topics spread all over the place on fitness and the search function here isn't the best so some stuff can be hard to find. It wouldn't be a big deal if it's not the busiest section, look at the reading room, there's not a lot of topics there but there's still some great info.

I would personally enjoy a fitness section. There is a lot of good information out there on Golf Fitness and a forum would be helpful in sorting it out. So far I have found this forum to be full of great experienced based information. In golf flexibility, endurance, and strength fitness is very important.

I go the gym 5 days a week-I'm as fit as a fiddle and strong as a horse-it doesnt help me play golf!! I played the same when I was not going the gym as I did do when I am. And I'm flexible too! I think golf fitness is over rated and is again only really going to help right at the top level. For any golfers who are very unfit/overweight it's simple-eat less and do some more exercise. I know this sound harsh-but it really is that simple. It always amuses me when I see personal trainers and fitness instructors in the gym-"go on 1 more rep"-they are literally paid to say that. It's not brain surgery is it.

I have to say I completely disagree with this statement.

If you look at it the other way, maybe the fact being strong and flexible from the gym hasn't helped you play golf, is because you are doing the wrong thing in the gym. Had you chosen a personal trainer maybe it would help. Plus you still need the correct technique. Being strong and flexible means it is possible for you to perform the correct technique if you learn it. Being weak and not flexible means you won't be able to even get in the correct position. Also eat less and do exercise is way to oversimplified. You have to eat RIGHT and do the RIGHT exercise. Eating 2000 calories a day of McDonalds and eating the same in a balanced diet would not have the same effect on you.

I guess since Erik has already put his foot down, it's not going to happen, but I think it would be an interesting idea. It would provide another topic to cover on the website as well. Just my 2 cents, but like I said, it doesn't seem to matter.

Were you doing the program with any guidance when you hurt yourself? I ask, because I am a golf swing trainer (20 years), specializing in golf conditioning; and the only reason to get injured is improper form, too much weight, or a pre-existing condition that flared up from a certain exercise. Golfers should never be afraid of training, but need to "ease" into it, and really, really listen to their body the entire time. Just my "2 cents" worth

I wouldn't expect it to be the most popular part of the forum, but I still think it would generate plenty of interest among some of us.

I am going through rehab right now so I would be the first one to say that. I just would be hesitant to have someone recommending an exercise meant to be for all rather than an individual.

i like the idea. i could use some routines to get myself into better shape. i've lost 50 lbs over the past 5 years just walking the couse and cutting back on sodas, but i could definitely stand to lose a few more.

When doing anything physical, it is SO critical to listen to your body. Your body will tell you very quickly if something isn't right. If so, "stop it right then and there".

Doing the right program is also very important. Most fitness trainers in gyms do not have an idea of golf swing mechanics and how the muscles are used in this very unnatural movement (golf swing).
