What is the average player handicap index?

One of the biggest misconception is that your handicap is your "average score." That's patently false. Your handicap is calculated by taking the average of best 10 scores in your last 20 rounds and multiplying it by 0.96. (if fewer than 20 scores available then the average of the lowest half of the scores available x 0.96).

Then add in slope/course rating and "shooting you cap" on par 72 course could be 103 or or even 96 not 98 as one might assume

i've been seeing some vast improvements in my game in the past month, so i'm thinking (hoping!) that my handicap will get into the single digits before too much longer. as it stands, i've hung out around 11-15 for the past year almost, so that's what i marked in the poll.

Given what I've seen at my CC, the average here is about 30. Only the serious guys keep handicaps at my course.

I don't think you have to be all that serious, you just have to enjoy playing competitive golf.

My handicap started at around 18 when I first established it in 1988. By 1990 it had dropped to the 10-13 range and has been there for most of the last 20 years.

This is so funny. I hit my driver 270-280 with carry and I out drive most of the people I play with. How in the world do so many people come up with 300+ drives? I get 300 + drive only on a rare occasion when it is downhill, down wind and hard fairways. They must be talking about their best drives not their average drives.

BTW, my handicap is between my ears!
