When Tiger defines a historic moment like Jack did at the 1969 Ryder Cup when he conceded Tony Jacklin's short putt for a tie and said "I don't think you would have missed that putt, but under the these circumstances I would never give you the opportunity", I believe he'll have reached the greatness that Jack achieved.

I don't know that Jack had tougher competion Phil and Ernie probably would have been as successful against him as Tom and Chi-Chi. Would Tom and Chi-Chi have been any more successful against Tiger? I doubt it.

Hmmm, Tiger has a chance but right now it's still Ben Hogan.

Hogan winning percentage is second All-Time and he turned pro a 17 with no coaching and was not raised since 2 to swing a club. Additionally he played competive late into his career (there was not a Champions Tour). At 54 he competed in his last Masters shooting a back nine of 30 (round of 66) - a record that stood for 20 years!!

Once Hogan found his swing the hard way "in the dirt" he was simply dominant like no player in history. His winning percentage from his first win 1938 until his late 1959 is simply crazy. And he was playing no more than 7 tournament after his crash. Winning 40% of what he entered and finishing in the top 3 over 80% of the time.

And during his prime his served 2 years in the military and oh yeah almost died in a car crash. He didn't enter the PGA Championships after his accident because it was 36 holes back then. His broken body simply couldn't handle it.

Name one golfer that went of to British Open having NEVER played there and won? Hogan did and he got sick when he was there. Jack Nicklaus played with him during a tournament and he hit 54 straight greens in regulations!!! His caddie said he NEVER asked for one bit of advice EVER!! Didn't even have to watch the ball. Oh yeah most people don't know he had horrible vision in his left eye after the accident. That's when his putting problems started - until then he was one of the best putters.

Here is the question? If Hogan, Tiger, Jack played a tournament during their primes who would win?? Or what is the best year each had? The year before his accident in 1948 in his prime Hogan won 10 tournament - are you kidding!! Or maybe 1953 he won 5 of 6 of the events he entered including 3 majors. Point being NO ONE during their prime was even close to Hogan NO ONE. As Lee Trevino said - Jack watched Hogan practice Hogan didn't watch Jack. From 1946 to 1955 Hogan entered 22 Major (his prime) and won 9 of them. NEVER finished out of the top 10 and had 4 second place finishes. Today Hogan would of entered 40 majors during those 10 years and likely played longer if his body didn't stop him and this would simply not be a debate.

If Tiger breaks Jack's record he will go down as the best ever. And the performance Tiger had at Pebble Beach winning by 15 strokes in the US Open is greatest performance I have even seen in golf. Tiger faces tougher competition as well. But he will never win 10 tournaments in one season, and be the dominant player Hogan was during his Prime. BUT if Tiger wins all 4 majors in one season - the door would be COMPLETELY shut.

Very interesting gathering of stats.

To respond to your question (bold added): Denny Shute did that. Went over once, won, and never went back owing to his dedication to the club were he was pro.

i agree with ggmorris but tiger is still my man. if i have to write a persuasive essay on whatever i want for english class im coming here to use that. lol it did start to make me like ben hogan a little bit more

Tiger is awesome but I still prefer Lord Byron. Lord Byron was the epitome of class and a true gentleman.

I would have to say El Tigre! Only because he scares other golfers more than Jack did in his day. Tiger can be ten shots back and 9 out of 10 analysts will pick him to win the event!

As of now, (Tiger's age and what he has accomplished), Tiger is a better golfer Jack. Judging by the way he plays right now, in the future, Tiger will not have a problem surpassing Jack with most majors won. But you never know, Tiger still has a lot of time ahead of him.

Odd really I thought tiger had never won a major when coming from behind even by as much as 1 shot !

I would never bet against Tiger and his swing, but I thought for consistency, Jack was much more consistent. Tiger gets frustrated at times and will make some bad shots. I would pick a combination of Tiger's swing and jack's head

I grew up watching Jack and learned alot from his Lesson Tee books. He is the greatest until Tiger whom I believe will shatter his records. I'am fortunate to have lived during both eras.

The greatest of all time? Jack! The greatest current day golfer? Tiger ....I believe Tiger will surpass Jack, but he hasn't go there just yet.

    • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
    • A study done by the European Tour shows spending less time over the ball produces better shots.  This makes sense. I can see where if you are over the ball a long time you lose the ability to make a more athletic swing. There is also the possibility of just overthinking the shot while over the wall as well and not being in the right headspace.
    • I recently picked up a vintage Ping Hoofer Lite carry bag.  I am not sure how old it is but estimate it is probably from around 2012 or so? I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps! I am going to try to attach a picture of the bag and will also describe it below. I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps in a way that makes the bag comfortable to carry.  The bag also seems to want to be more upright/ vertical than how you would normally carry a bag like this. I have tried to search this site and others on the web but almost all info is on the newer ping Hoofer bags which have quite a different design. The bag is pretty minimal in terms of pockets and has no handle on the top.  It has 2 backpack straps that are not connected to each other.  They are connected to the top of the bag and in the middle of the bag above the primary ball/ gear pocket. Any feedback appreciated, thanks for your help!
