Jack is the man until Tiger breaks his records which he is well on his way of doing. After he does, They're both the best in my book.

Jack is the greatest at this point. He has always handled himself with such dignity and charm - Tiger could take a page from Jack's book.

Tiger's too pverpowering. The game has changed, but still, I don't think Jack could match up.

Are you kidding? I guess you actually never saw Nicklaus play in his prime. Nicklaus was the longest straightest driver ever. In his day, no would could hit it as far or as high and keep it in the fairway. Many players nowdays hit the ball as long as or longer than Tiger does. And as Johnny Miller says, Tiger has a tendency to play army with his driver: right, left, right, left! - somedays he doesn't know where it's going. To say Nicklaus couldn't compete with Tiger's power game is ridiculous. He routinely drove the ball over 300 yards with persimmon clubs.

Jack is from the bygone ERA of which he was the Greatest . Tiger is the NEW beginning to a Golf age where it will take another hundred years or so to have another human born who can change the face of golfing history . Tiger is not in the History of golf ... He Writes them .

Arnold Palmer changed the face of golfing history more than Tiger. Does that make him better than Jack or Tiger? Hardly.

It's probably an exercise in futility to compare anyone who competed at different times, different clubs, balls, etc. There's no doubt they were both good for golf. I feel fortunate that I was able to see both of them play in their prime and experience the impact and charisma of their personalities and the brilliance of their game in real time.

Even though his regular PGA career was pretty much over when I was a kid and most of what I remember is his Senior PGA (now the Champions Tour) days, I still think Jack is better than Tiger. They had to use real wood drivers which were a lot smaller back then. Jack also won 18 majors and runnered-up in another 19. That means, he could've had 37 major victories!!! He was also playing against Arnold Palmer which you could argue that Tiger & Phil are the modern day Jack & Arnie.

Once Tiger wins more majors than Jack there will be no questions he is the best golfer.

The questions is can someone ever beat Tigers majors wins after he passes Jack?

I was an Arnie man during Jack's time so I am a Tiger fan. Jack was great, but Tiger has an all around better game.

I agree with Flap. Number of seconds is phenomenal and competition in Jack's day didn't seem to be as mentally intimidated as Tiger's does. Time will tell.
So for today I say Jack.

Tiger has graphite shafts , high tech balls , hollow steel headed woods.
jack drove the ball with steel shafts , wooden head and wound ball , he probably drove it farther than woods if he had the same technology.

    • Day 575 - 2026-04-29 Well, shit. (Not golf related.) Did some "expert witness" stuff today, and talked with some developers about a UI/UX thing for two hours. At various times throughout the day I grabbed the putter in my office and did some downswing work.
    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
