Isn't the ability to adjust to changing equipment an indicator of greater ability, not less?

I think most would argue that the equipment has made the game a little easier, so adjusting to it has hardly been a challenge for the likes of Tiger. Or even Fred Funk, for that matter.

But the rejoinder to the "equipment is better" argument is that courses have gotten a lot longer since Arnie/Jack/Gary days. All of which proves that you and Rocky are both right: it's hard to compare players from different eras. Suffice to say, they were both great. And I have no doubt that, barring an injury, Tiger will get more than 18.

Jack is the best because when he was playing they all played for titles and trophies. He didn't play for millions of dollars.

I am SO tired of hearing about Tiger Tiger Tiger... Blah blah blah...

Jack IS the man, he was the first, and he did it with crappy equipment, and even worse fairways and greens...

Tough to say since I didn't follow golf until my mid 20's, which was well after Jack's prime. I did name my first son Jack, and I did like that connection with Mr. Nicklaus.

Being from Columbus Ohio, gotta vote for Jack.

Ditto. Although I have grown up in the "Tiger Era" I had to vote for Jack. Us Buckeyes have to stick together.

In my Pro-Walker stand bag:

I wasn't alive at jack's prime so I go with tiger being the greatest golfer, also tiger can rip it further, has a better short game, and he's a built athlete, what else is their to say?

Gotta go with Jack...18 majors baby!!

Tiger is the best to ever hold a club. He'll prove me correct over the next 8 years.
I'd have said that there were better ball strikers a few years ago, but Tiger has taken care of that deficiency in his game. Trevino, Nicklaus, Snead or Hogan with modern equipment, (in their respective primes [which Tiger isn't in yet]) might have challenged his as the outright best a few years back, but Tiger has stepped into another dimension with recent changes in his game. note: Each of those greats mentioned above didn't EVER have the short game that Tiger has- so now there is little debate.

I will have to say Tiger. I have never seen Jack play. I think athletes get better as time goes by in all sports. Not taken away from the older guys people are just bigger, faster, and stronger. I am new at golf so what I am saying my not make a lot of sense. On Jacks side, he did not have the technology in the clubs that today's players have. So I really don't know but I am going to go with Tiger because I think he has gotten me and a lot other people into the game.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
