Well, I registered at my local TGA site and now have a GHIN number. I have entered 6 scores so far and my official handicap is 2.5. Now I know that they only take the lowest score (I think) since I only have 6 entered, but still...it is a 2.5 as of the last revision.

My question is, how many scores do I need to be considered true to my handicap? What I mean is, I don't think I am a 2.5 handicapper right now and I know its because there has only been one score used. But if after "x" number of scores are entered, I am for instance a 5, then I will consider myself to be a truly 5 handicapper...does that make sense?

20 scores posted is the magic number. 10 are used to calculate the index.

If you play a variety of courses and post ALL scores you should play at or below your handicap about 25% of the time.

Okay, thats what I thought. So once I get in 20 rounds, whatever my handicap is at that time will be my true handicap and then it will just deviate a little from that? Thanks man.

I think that is a little ambitious to think just a little deviation. 3 handicaps shot in the high 70s or even an 80 or 81 sometimes. I have flirted with the 90s. If you are shooting always around your ghin number you are playing really well.

If this is the case, the index will go down accordingly. It is not possible to play to your index most of the time without it going down, unless you are "sandbagging".

My scores range from 75-84. The 75 being my best and 84 being my worst. My average is probably around 80. I never shoot in the 90s. I can't remember the last time I shot in the 90s. Keep in mind that my current GHIN number that I posted is only based on the 5 scores entered(figured on one score which is my 75). Once I get my 20 in then I am sure it will go up from what I have posted here. As long as my scores stay average, I don't see it getting much higher than a 5.

When I say deviate a little, I mean it shouldn't jump from a 5 to a 15.

Barring a train wreck you are

absolutely correct! Good luck and good playing!!

I would love to attend a Dave Pelz short game clinic. I too give up more shots from 100 yards in. I spend a majority of my practice time on pitching and chipping and it seems to be working.

Well, I got my first lesson yesterday on my route to reaching my low handiap goals. Most of the things we found were things I already knew but he made it easier to get them corrected.
1)He changed my grip just a little to where my left thumb was more into the palm of my right...I used to have my hands a little further apart and he said that this would allow the club to move around too much.
2)I have to work on my takeaway, which I was already working on. But I still didn't have it going like I should. This definitely helps keep me on plane. I was taking the clube bak really flat which was causing my inconsistent ball flight.
3)I have to work on keep flex in my left knee through impact and having my hands ahead of the ball. I had the dreaded "scoop" just a little at impact. This also helps me stay on my feet instead of coming up in my toes. And this is the reason that I never take a divot.

I am very happy and impressed with him so far. He knows what is he doing for sure. He said my swing was pretty good for self taught. He also said that I am leaving alot of distance on the table since I was scooping at impact. That is very encouraging as well. I am going to practice these things for a few weeks and then go back for my second lesson. He says he doesn't see any problems reaching my goals...he said that I was closer than I think.

Well, I go back for my second session with the teacher tomorrow. I get to see if my range time working on my swing changes has been productive. I feel that I have made some good progress but like he told me last time "Feel is not always real!" I am very excited to see what he says. I will post updates once I get back.

I was supposed to have my next session this afternoon, but mother nature did not want me too for some reason.

Much of the work we do is inside for the moment. He has a mat and net that you hit into while he gets you on 2 different video cameras. Then you watch the slow-mo with lines on the big screen. Once we do that for a while he will take me out to their driving range which is covered so we can hit rain or shine...which is great! I wish we had those in my area. The teacher is about an hour away from me but he is one of the best around!

This is just a pro at my course. There is not video equipment, etc., just her keen eye and a bucket of balls. I thought about going to Golf Galaxy for a similar swing analysis. Worth it?

I went to Golf Galaxy once and did that...it's worth it because it is fairly cheap. If you have never done it before then I would say yes. They can offer some very helpful info.

Just called the local GG and they don't do just the analysis anymore. :(

They won't just provide the analysis now. You need to take a lesson.
