So, I'm still experimenting with my chipping and need to practice it more. Recently, I really got my high/flop chips relatively accurate. I can also hit low runners that spin like none other. I use a 58 degree wedge for basically all my chips (not up for discussion). Assistance is needed in the field of hitting chips about waist high and have them with minimal roll. What's a good strategy for doing this? Obviously, with accuracy.

Given you're not up for discussing the weapon, I would say that leaves you with ball position. Why don't you want to use a different club?

yay!! Welcome to the exclusive lob wedge club! (ELWC) i get bickered at all the time for it, but now theres three of us in one thread!

Anyway, it would seem that you have all of the shots..the low one i am assuming you hit it with mid ball position, hitting down on the ball, abbreviated follow thru?

Flop, are you a phil or tiger like flopper?

If i were to recomend how i hit mines, heres how i do it,

If im in the fairway- say i have 20 yards to the pin, i put the ball just outside of my right foot, i make a quick wrist cock and take the club to wherever it feels right for the given distance, and then i deliver the club as fast as i can to teh back of the ball taking a divot, and hopefully leaving the club in the ground (yes, i mean leaving it in the divot, or at most no higher than a knee follow through) For me, this produces a mid shot with a ton of spin that you can knock pretty close. Spinning em too much with this? take some of the wrist cock off.

Craig Stadler (The walrus) used to do all his short shorts around the green exclusively with his sand wedge (probably a 56 degree).

In this "modern" age of carrying half a bag of wedges, and the other half with hybrids, it nice to hear that some of you folks prefer to be shot makers.

That being said, I use a 3 , 6, or 9 iron to do my chip shots (keeping the ball as close to the ground as possible, and letting it run like a putt to the hole).

You will find that you are good at what you practice...

Party on.................

I mean eventually I'll get into the whole using other clubs for chips, but for now I need a back up plan if things get a little messy, eh?

So far with my chips, the low ones, (by the way I'm talking just around the green) I put my hands way forward, slight back ball position, keep my wrists steady follow through really down into the ball and keep my follow through down.. Gets it real low and a ton of check. My flops I play the face far open, come back with no wrist action, then when I bring my hands down, flip my wrists a little bit. POPS it straight up, and stops it dead. What I'm looking for is a mid height chip shot that you can play just off the green and get a small amount of role. I had it over the summer.

By the way, laxplayer, over the summer, I LOVED that shot. During my state tourney last year, I would find myself like 30 yards from the green, but i would hit a punch/pitch shots which would bounce once or twice and stop dead. Lead me to shoot a 3 over the first 9. I would find my club stuck in the ground. Fun stuff.

Glad you enjoy it..the grounds crew at my course certainly doesnt :P One thing you may want to try is just flat out square faced chipping with your lobber? just take a slightly open stance, place the ball back in stance, and just rock the shoulders really. Should get enough back spin to check, but roll out depending how much you spin it..

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think i may also try moving it up in my stance. maybe it will pop it up a little bit more productively

Just out of curiosity....what bounce do you have on your 58*....and do you open / close the face for these shots?

I'm struggling with the short game and am hoping that I get schooled up by my father next week. We get in a few rounds a year together and he always amazes me with his smooth and accurate short game....flopping it tight like a champ. He's 62 and been doing this for years....he's gotta give me some help one of these years

Dub, i can answer these for you

Bounce- low bounce probobly, 6/4 work best i think. lets you stay down and through the ball. Although im not sure most 58's come that low, its definetly worth it to have them grinded/bent. 1 degree=1 bounce degree. Definetly open the face, make a pretty good ascending blow, and accelerate through and you will be floppin and dancin in no time!

i would open the face and really use my wrists to control the club. im not sure if this is the best way to get it high and stop, but i was able to pop it up

If you aim your body to the left and clubface to the right of the flag, the two important things is:
- Swing on the plane of your shoulders and body!
- Make a descending blow on the ball

Once you get comfortable with this, it's the coolest shot in golf. You don't need wrists, but you have to accelerate through the ball, also important for chipping, pitching and flopping.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
