It is acceptable to work in a Golf shop...

And not know how to re-grip a golf club?

Maybe I'm a bit demanding on this, but I visited the driving range yesterday, which has a fully stocked proshop. I intended to replace the grip on my driver, but none of the 3-4 guys working at the shop knew how to replace grips... but they kindly offered to let me leave my club till they had someone to come in who could do it (no thanks!)

Is this normal or acceptable?

I don't even work in a shop and I know how to regrip...

Should've asked if you could pay for the grip and use their shop for 2 minutes to do it yourself.

If they are just kids working a part time job that doesn't surprise me... I don't know if there is really a standard for what skills you should have for working in a pro shop. It's certainly not a prerequisite, if that's what you mean, but I agree it's something they probably should know how to do.

Nope....that's not a full function shop.

For instance.....I went to a local shop yesterday on my way home from playing. I wanted a midsize grip on my 3hybrid.

There was on person staffing the shop. She is a super nice gal in her late 50's. She stripped the headcover off and went straight to the back room where they work their magic. I picked out the grip and then went over to the putting area and played with putters for a bit.

She had me fixed in short order, too. That is how it should be.

It's hard to believe that the owner of a golf shop would staff it with 3-4 guys at a time and they can't regrip a single stick????

I could possibly understand if you needed your whole bag done and they were busy.....but one stick....gimmie a break.

I work part-time in a golf shop and know how to re-grip a club. Was one of the very first things I learnt. But I wouldn't be confident to do it if I was working alone, firstly for health and safety reasons, and secondly because I'm not really meant to do it. I'm perfectly happy regripping my own clubs though.

Pretty poor really but I guess it depends on the shop. Was it a "proper" specialist pro shop or just somewhere that sells golf clubs?

It is probably pretty normal. If it is an independently owned range with a shop, there is probably an owner and maybe another person that does all the club work, and they just were not there. I see that quite a bit around here. Maybe it was their day off or they had left for the day.

From the business side of things, and this may sound silly, but someone who knows how to regrip a club would probably want to make more money, which an independent owner wouldn't want to do. All they want is to have someone there to sell buckets of balls and not steal anything. Too much liability in having someone do something they are not comfortable with.

The issue has been resolved for me. I'm covered with fresh grips at present.

I'll be checking over at Harbor Freight tools for a small suction cup mounted vise clamp for low $$$$$.

I'll pick up one of the club vice jaw inserts and ebay.com on future grips and do it myself.

It's gonna be a must around my house now that my son is playing. I also need to keep some on hand for my father. He visits every so often and we play. He'll let his grips wither down to nothing sometimes. He'd appreciate a fresh set of Tour Velvets when he visits.

Normal AND acceptable. I think most shops treat golf club repair as a specialty skill and I really don't think EVERY person working in a golf shop always has this training. Even though changing grips is a pretty simple thing, I don't think I would trust it to someone who was hired to sell merchandise.
