What exactly goes down at a driver fitting and are they really necessary? Is the purpose really just to figure out what kind of shaft you should be using and seeing which driver you hit better/further?

When I went for Driver fitting, we went through a variety of different club-head types and shafts. Switching out the old driver for the new one added distance right off the bat for me.

I went in today for fitting and was surprised how much better a shaft suited for my swing helps. I took 2 of my drivers in
TP 8.5 burner matrix shaft
909d2 with a graphite design stiff

For me the burner was the wrong launch angle. I dont remember spin and angle numbers but I was getting 250-260 with another 20 yards roll.

The Titleist was more spin and high launch angle. I was getting 260-270 with another 15-20 yards of roll.

My swing speeds was around 103-105 on his monitor.
He determined to change the shaft in my titleist because of the torque in the factory shaft and the shaft was not stiff enough.
I gained another 20+ yards from the change. But what I really liked better than that was my shots were not all over the place. My shot pattern tightened up.
I hope this helps. Because he sure helped me today.

If you get a fitting at a location where they have either a lot of clubs or, even better, have the fitting systems that allow the same clubhead to be switched out with different shafts you'll get a lot out of a fitting. I recently went through it at a Golf Galaxy that had the Callaway, Titleist and Nike fitting carts, as well as an entire store of inventory for me to test different heads and shafts. I'm glad I did this because the perfect fit for me ended up being a head and shaft that is not common pairing (at least on shelves in retail stores). Have an idea what you want to try. Shafts are the biggest difference, so try what you like in different shafts. Try not to have any prejudices against a particular brand/model, though, as it might surprise you with the correct shaft and head combination.

One thing to watch out for it the tee height during fitting. They set me up with a tee that was way to high and it caused all of my shots to be too high and fade/slice. Once I got a good tee height for me things went much smoother.

Does anyone know how much this (driver fittings with multiple heads/shafts with launch monitor) costs at a place like Golfsmith? Or a local pro shop? (Sorry to go offtopic).

A lot of the shops do a refund or partial refund if you buy the club from them. I know the place I go to charges $75 but refunds you $40 if you buy a club/shaft, so the cost is $35 which is well worth it.

It depends on how much equipment they have for you to test. My guy charged $75 but he had a boatload of different shafts ranging from Aldila to Matrix. As for the original question, a driver fitting is like any club fitting. The more dialed in it is, the better opportunity it gives you to play better. FWIW, a good fitting will measure the exact CPM of the shaft you should be playing with, along with length, grip size and driver head and loft. Some heads are made to spin more, some less just like shafts. You can also get your shaft pured so that the flex point is always the same. Believe me, it may not sound like much but an eight to ten yard gain is huge.

I'm convinced that fitting is a must... I've been fitted for irons but not a driver... $75 doesn't seem like a lot of money to invest to ensure that you get the proper specs... Especially if you can go to the course knowing you're playing the correct equipment...

At the Golf Galaxy where I got my driver fitting, it was on a launch monitor and they had the full club carts for Callaway, Nike and Titleist. I probably hit about 15-18 different clubs between the different combinations. The cost was only $29.99. They do a full fitting for $75 I believe (that's all clubs). I ended up buying one of the clubs I tested and they did not refund my $30, but I know some places do that.

I was just fitted at my local course for a new driver, had the irons and hybrids done this winter. The irons are amazing, so much easier to use. Im almost 6'5", so i was reaching a lot with my shoulders to hit the ball with my irons. This cured that, and gave me much better yardage.

Since my question relates to driver fitting I dug up this old thread.

Do you know when you have a driver fitting if there is a way they can tell what length driver you need?

When I got fit for my new irons this week, they placed a sticker over the face of the club and we worked in 1/4" increments to figure out that my irons needed to be 3/4" shorter.  Was curious if they fit a driver in the same manner.  I tend to always play a driver that is 1" shorter and wonder if this is the correct length for me.

to answer my question above, I stopped in GG yesterday and they said they fit drivers for length the same way as irons.  So I'll probably look at getting something off the used rack and have it fitted to my specs.

    • Day 364: About an hour and a half practice session. Spent most of it at the range. Did a solid 30 minutes of work on my priority piece, with filming. I think it's improving, but will probably check in on Evolvr to make sure. Then spent the last ~20 minutes putting, working mostly on short putts.

    • Day 79 (19 July 25) - Band rehearsal this morning - got home midafternoon, opted to work more with the magnetic alignment tool with the wedges.  Used it to work on face position at the bottom of the swing arc - followed up with easy pitches up to 50yds.  Seeing better face control and over improved accuracy toward target…session was cut short with pop up rain showers.
    • This is a great discussion. Other parts of the course where there are houses have white stakes and signs. This keeps people from trespassing and hitting shots on their property. There is another county road on the east side of the course that does not have white stakes like the hole I described. I checked the score card and there is nothing to indicate these roadways are OB. I think a county drainage ditch would be considered government right-of-way so it is the peoples land 🤣. But you are in the power industry and know more about those sorts of things than me.
