I'm going to Myrtle Beach with a few friends in a couple weeks and we want to squeeze in a round. Any suggestions? We don't want to spend a fortune, maybe 40-90 bucks. Man O'War look pretty wild!

I was not impressed at all by Man-of-War. Boring. I love The Witch. Nearby and just an awesome course. I am pretty sure The Witch, The Wizard, and Man-of-War are all owned by the same group. Of the three, the Man-o-War was my least favorite. Also, get up to the Little River area about 20 minutes north of Myrtle Beach. Glen Dornach is my all time favorite course. I live 15 miles from Pinehurst, NC and have played some great courses. But Glen Dornach is my all time favorite course. Panther Run and Tigers Eye are up near Little River and are great courses. Check out Angel Trace. Wonderful course. Possum Trot and Waterway Hills are two great courses in N. Myrtle Beach. I have played them a dozen times each and for the money, they are hard to beat. More affordable than most, but wonderful layouts. If you want to splurge and play one high end course, play Glen Dornach. You can thank me later. Also in the same class is Caledonia south of Myrtle Beach. A premier course for sure that you would not soon forget. A balance of the high end and middle courses (price wise) would have to be The Witch. One of my favorite golf courses ever. I plan to play that course many, many more times. So many choices in the Myrtle Beach area. Perhaps consider a few less expensive tracts like Possum Trot and Waterway Hills. Then a mid/upper level like The Witch. And one premier course like Glen Dornach or Caledonia. Many ways to skin a cat and you are sure to have a ball either way you go. If you ever head towards Pinehurst,NC for a golf vacation, shoot me a pm. Happy to tell you about some premier courses that lack the premier prices. Some 40 courses in the area but I only play about 8 of them.

Should have read the whole thread before responding

One course, on a budget, staying in N Myrtle....

Possum Trot

They also have a great practice facility. Nice short game range, reg range, and super nice (and large) putting/chipping green. Wonderful facility and big bang for the buck.

Second choice in the area, Waterway Hills. Very nice golf course.

So far I've played Whispering Pines, Pine Needles and Legacy Golf Links... what others have you played in the area and what would you recomend for a good price. I have been in NC about a year and plan on making a few trips to the Sandhills every year. For the record... I liked all three courses... obviously they are in three different price ranges, but I felt like I got my money's worth at all three.

My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

I have heard Pine Needles is nice but have not played it yet. Great instruction there from Peggy Kirk Bell. Plan on having the wife get lessons there in the near future. Great golf instruction program.

If in the area, drop by Roberts Golf Shop on Hwy US 1 in Southern Pines (beside Hardees as you are heading into S. Pines on US1. If there are any good deals or specials in the papers or local golf books, he will know about it. Robert has been there forever. Got my first set of clubs there about 20 years back. Nice golf shop that serves the area well.

I have played the Legacy and enjoyed it, but there are much better courses at that price point in the area. All are within 20 miles of Pinehurst with the exception of Tot Hill Farm which is about 45 minutes north just off Hwy 220 on the way to Asheboro. You should expect lush fairways and greens in near perfect condition on these courses. April to early June, and mid Sept to early Dec are great times to visit if you don't already know. Good value can be found as rates drop in mid Summer, but some courses water more than others and you will be fighting some pretty tough heat yourself either way.

Some of my regulars are (in order of priority)

Foxfire (east and west course in the village of Foxfire) Playable tract and fun.

The Carolina (Whispering Pines) Classic NC golf design. I play here alot.

Tobacco Road (Up above Vass on the way to Sanford) Tricky design, but fun.

Bayonet at Puppy Creek (between Aberdeen and Raeford) Interesting tract.

Tot Hill Farm (Asheboro) Scenic course. Lovely.

The Pit (Aberdeen) Interesting design, actually was made from a sand pit.

Beacon Ridge (West End) Good value and traditional layout.

Keep in mind these are all relatively affordable courses. Regular prime rates for am tee times is in the $50-90 range. I use the Sandhill Golf Discount card that helps locals get a break on the green fees, but these are not outlandishly expensive courses. These are the ones that locals in the know will play every weekend. There are certainly some prime courses in the area as well. Pinehurst #2 and #7 are my favorites. But they are in a totally different price point. Special occasion courses.

I ended up playing man-o-war, if you go to martins they have a desk in the front that you can book tee times through at a discounted rate. The course in unremarkable. Water is really only in play on a few holes, unless you have a case of the shanks. The course itself was in nice condition. BUT I WILL NEVER GO BACK!! First off we had a 7:40 tee time. The course was infested with midges, little bastard bugs that act like mosquitos. They were EVERYWHERE! I don't know if that is the norm around there, but I didn't pay 69 bucks to be attacked by bugs. The first 5 holes were terrible. You could almost not see your ball. I took a swing and left about 7 dead ones on the driver head and anonther 5-6 on my shaft. That held up play quite a bit, and made it pretty unbearable. At the turn the ranger came up and said we were playing 10 minutes behind the accepted rate of play. I asked him about the bugs and he gave a bunch of smart @ss remarkes back. Needless to say I won't be going back there again.

Putter: Odyssey Metal-X #9

Sorry to say I told you... well, you get the point

The bugs sound terrible. Played courses in that area for 15 years and never seen anything like you describe. Don't let Manowar rub you wrong. It is my least favorite course in all of Myrtle Beach area (90 courses). Next time, try some of my suggestions from earlier. You will have a great round of golf at any of them.

Tin Cup is that the real name?Damn and all this time I thought they just called them that.See ypu are never too old to learn.Thanks.

No, they're not called that. Any reference I've ever seen to "noseum" is just people trying to say "no-see-um."

Use The Google.

I am just up the road in Wilmington, but with my golf package company I am in MB all the time and I have been lucky enough to play everything except the new Founders at PI and the private courses ( I have played Surf Club). The Passport and Senior Cards are great for locals when they can work the 48 hour rule. I was thinking of the "package" round rates which have gone up anyway despite the economy. It was a little quieter this year and maybe they will rethink for 2010 or adjust for the Fall.!! By the way- while they have murdered the Wild Wing golf complex Avocet is a very nice course and has been in good shape all Spring so far!
