It has been a while for me. The last one I broke was in college, over 10 years ago. I've slightly bent a few by slamming them into the ground since then, but never broken.

Fairways and Greens.

I broke an old 5 wood this year throwing it up into a tree while trying to dislodge the putter I had previously thrown up there. OOPS!

About 6 years ago I broke my putter over my knee on the 17th green. I had to putt out with my 3 Iron and almost holed a 12 footer with it. The worst part of it was that the Ping I had at the time had a special ballbearing in the hozel that makes it way tougher to re-shaft. It took them about a week to get it back to me.

Two years ago I side armed the same putter towards my bag and it hopped once then rolled into a pond. It only went in a couple feet so I was able to fish it out. After drying it off, I only took 5 Putts on the last 4 holes. I guess the near drowning taught it a lesson. I have since replaced it with the Cameron. Price alone is reason not to get too carried away.

I am happy to say, I never broke a club in anger. Sure there have times I wanted to, but never went through with it.

I got engaged on November 19, 2005 to a lady who had bought me a Taylormade R580XD, Adams Irons a Calloway "MLB" bag, a Calloway Golf jacket (different holidays / birthdays / etc) and tells me I should "go play with the guys."

Reminds me of a time when a guy, after 3 putting the 18th hole to lose several hundred dollars, threw his brand new Odyssey putter into the middle of the lake next to the green. One of our cart kids witnessed the act and showed up an hour after his shift decked out with a mask, fins, and a snorkel. He must have been swimming around in that nasty lake for 45 minutes before he found that putter. The bad thing was the guy who tossed it found out and demanded his putter back. The head pro told him he abandoned the putter when he threw it in the lake and told him tough luck. He did end up giving the guy a 30% dicount on a new one though.

I voted for the "10 years" thing because my actual answer, "Never," was not shown.

I never understood people taking out their anger on a club. I'm willing to bet that in every case, the club isn't the one that ****ed up.

I take care of my clubs. I'll slam an iron into the ground, but only if it's going to sink all the way in (i.e. no chance of breaking), and that's just me being frustrated, not intentionally trying to damage anything. And I only do that maybe once a year...

I've whapped my driver against the ground, too, but again the force with which I do so is a lot closer to "tap" than "slam."

LOL...i can just see you seeing the 5 wood come back down in 2 and you screaming **** and breaking your putter when it comes down lol... I actually broke all my irons in 1 round of golf, mostly because i knew I was getting new shafts for them that night...so why not get some anger out...previously i broke my putter twice, drive twice, and 3 wood once. :o...i think i have broken about 10 - 15 clubs :O

I have a healthy temper, but suprisingly I have never broken a club. I lost a golf buddy by innocently asking his wife if he had bought a new bag yet to replace the one he destroyed by kicking several holes in it. I was banished due to this egregious violation of the male code. Better off, his temper tantrums lessened my enjoyment of the round. Which is probably the best reason to refrain from club carnage besides cost I can think of.

Personally never,

But my one buddy breaks and/or chucks his club into the nearest pond at least once every other week.

my club cementary includes:
1. driver (tried to tee-off again, this time with a tee-marker )
2. 3-wood ( see above )
3. 3-wood ( gently toss towards the bag, landed perp. to the bag stand and snap)
4. 6-iron (toss into bushes, unfortunatelly there was a rock too...)
5. PW (playing from under the tree, hit the trunk in follow-through... so I had to hit it again, this time full contact )

Ok, it's a lot. But spread it across 5 years... ain't that bad. Nothing this year (yet), I'm working on it with help of Bob Rotella

kind of like a short-stop flipping the ball over to the 2nd base for a double play... doesn't take much for a graphite shaft if it hits a metal bagstand leg in perfect 90deg angle

The fact that this many people have broken clubs baffles me. I had a horrible temper in high school and quickly realized that a chnage was mandatory. I would never even think of throwing one of my clubs. I broke my tennis raqcuet, but that was because it slipped out of my hand when I was trying a weird serve. I can only suggest anger management to you unfortunate people that can't control yourselves.

I broke a club on accident once. I can hit the Happy Gilmore drive pretty successfully (just to get some laughs from people around) most of the time but once I hit the ground too hard and the head of my driver I used went flying off. It was an old driver so not a huge loss.
