I've been seriously playing a year now. After countless hours practicing last year, I went from playing 110 to a bogey game within last season. I practiced, researched, read, studied, watched, everything I could to improve. My goal is to get consistently in the low 80s by the end of the year. That means more practice practice practice.

My gf has realized since last year that I spend all my time with golf, so she decided to make a concious effort to learn so she could play with me. Last fall, I got her a 10 set of lessons, bought her a starter women's golf club set and take her to the range with me 2-3 times a week.

Me, I've worked extra hard to get where I am. Her, she's just trying to learn so she can spend time with me. I have yet to take her to the course, but I'm taking her for the first time this week. What should I expect and how should I get her to improve so we can actually have FUN playing golf together?

Does she need more lessons? I would love to find her another female playing partner, but serious female golfers seem hard to come by.

Bottom line, I want her to be good enough so we can enjoy playing golf together. How do I accomplish this?

Simply put, if she doesn't like golf, she isn't going to get better. If she does like golf, she'll be fine. In time. Just remember how hard it was to get to where you are now.

She's really starting to love golf. We spent the whole Sunday a couple weeks ago watching the Masters. I left for a few hours during the day to go to Twilight and when I got home, she was still watching it by herself. On her days off, she's always asking to go to the pitch and putt or driving range. But she doesn't love golf as much as I do...or she just doesnt have the discipline and desire to pound in hours a day like I do. She just wants to be able to have fun playing. People who play golf just for casual fun just never seem to improve...

The turning point I think will be when she goes out on to the course. The course may be brutal on her and make her want to practice to get better or the opposite. So take it easy on her that day and make it as enjoyable as possible.

My fiance did the same thing last year.

She enjoys playing, but has no interest in taking it seriously. She wants to improve, but she doesnt care if it takes years to shoot 90. Me on the other hand, I work at it every day. I even made a swing room in the garage we built to pratice in the winter.

I would think you are already doing things correctly. I agree with WRX, it can go either way when you get to the course so make it as fun and enjoyable for her as you can. Don't be competitive at all. Try and go out later in the day (or anytime the course might be slow). The last thing she needs is to be worried about other golfers. Play just the two of you and let people go through as they come up.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Take her to a short, flat, UNCROWDED course without a lot of hazards. And don't give her too much instruction while you're out there. Have fun and bring your patience.

i dont think its possible. I hate it when i play with women, cause they are usually horrible...no offense, just my experience.

I am in a similar boat, wanting to get my wife playing. First step, I will get her a putter (she is left handed) have her putt some while I am practicing at the putting green. Not a cheap putter. I want her to feel like it is an important thing. For women, that means spending money sometimes. When I play, I will have her putt on some/all of the greens a bit (off peak hours of course). That will be more fun for her than just riding along and holding the pin. Simple stuff. Soon, I will get her into a golf shop, show her all the cool womens clubs, clothes, and stuff. Put some Golf Channel on with a Nancy Lopez or Christie Kerr "Teaching Lesson" or similar. Let her see chicks playing the game. Then get her some female instructor that will get her started off in the right direction. A lesson every two weeks or something. I am not teaching her any aspect of golf. Hell no! Let her feel like she is doing it all by herself. Even though I had a big part in it of course. Much like taking a small child fishing.

Yea, I hear you. Maybe you should take her to a par 3 course just to get her feet wet? Those par 4s and 5s can be really daunting at first.

I can understand where your coming from, but you want it to be fun for her and fun for you. If she gets pissed off that your complaining about her grip, then it's not fun for her or YOU. Just relax and remember it's your GF not your buddies.

thanks all!

she's competitive in everything we do together. I think she wants to learn golf so she can beat me.

i'm taking her to a short 4000yd golf course with no par 5s. Pretty easy course.

We'll see what happens...

And if your situation is anything like mine that's why she tells her girlfriends she lets you go play golf - "To get away from the ball and chain"

It's nice that my kids are getting more interested so I chalk it off to spending quality time with them. She knows I love the game and has talked about trying it out occasionally, but thinks the size of her chest will prevent her from swinging the club. lol

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
