naples is the golf capital of the world...well to a certain extent

we have more golf courses per capita here than anywhere else in the world. its a golfers paradise down here thats for sure. but yes, like you said, you MUST shoot low all the time to be considered a "good" golfer in naples. plenty of people here are trying to do the exact same thing as me, so i have some tough competition.

At a club in Houston where many tour players practiced, there was a pristine short game area for 0 to 40 yards and sand traps. What was most revealing was watching someone like Elkington spend the whole afternoon in that one little area. It was awe inspiring to see these guys routinely hit delicate little pitch shots from 10 to 15 yards into a cluster of balls one would be hard pressed to equal pitching the ball underhanded like horseshoes. When they chipped, the hole would fill with balls and you could cover the whole batch of them with a beach towel. A good pro's short game is unachievable by anyone unable to spend countless hours, day after day... until the club is as reliable as tossing a ball by hand. And they do it from different grasses and lies week after week. The short game skill level seemed greater to me than when they hit long irons as accurately as we hit wedges. Just watching, it sure seemed like the better players only hit a few full shots compared to their short game practice.

well I'm watching the coverage from the Players, and they were talking about how these players practice these short pitch/chip shots. I was wondering how much does the average player practice during a week compared to a tour player, and how much time is spent on each of these categories:

Hey this is my typical day of practise. I have been doing this routine for about 3 weeks now.

6.00am Wake Up 6.30 Breakfast 7.00 Short game 8.30 Range Work 10.30 Putting 12.00 Lunch 1.00 9 Holes 3.00 Short Game 4.00 Putting 5.30 Gym 7.00 Dinner. My plan is to do this 5 days a week for the next 5 years. I should be pretty good by then hopefuly

That's a pretty good routine. What do you do and/or plan to do for money, out of curiosity? Surely that type of routine runs up a bill pretty quickly, on top of your every day expenses i.e. food/shelter/beer, you know, the essentials...

lately I have been getting a lot more practice time in
typically i will work on: (each week)

putting-2-3hrs
wedges-2 hrs (from 15-75yds)
range-very little, maybe 45mins. a week unless I need to work on something, i rarely hit balls

no specific day or time, just whenever time/work permits
usually 9 holes during the week and 18 on the weekend

I would like more, but you know things like work/wife and kid take priority
and im not a member anythwere, so I have to pay each time i practice and golf

next year, will be a different story
I will be a member at one of the nicer courses in town and will have access to all practice facilities - I plan to spend A LOT of time there next summer

Hey,

I work at a golf course 3 days a week so when I get a full day to practise, thats the plan I stick to. I don't drink alcohol anyway so that saves me a bundle!

If it isn't raining I will typically work on putting and chipping for 45 minutes or so during my lunch break.

About two or three days a week after work I typically stop by the range and hit a small bucket of 50-70 yard shots (they have a special range and green set up for these shots). I'll go pick up those balls and then hit the bucket again with the rest of my clubs (majority being low-mid irons and the last 10 or so with woods)

I try to about 2 hours a day on irons and drivers and woods. I practice putting when i can but that is the best part of my game

Some weeks I basically work flex-time - get it done - so I usually play on weekdays when course isn't so crowded.

In a month during warm weather, I'll play about five 18s and two 9s.

On days when I play, I'll chip and put, hit a few drives and irons. Before I tee off, I hide about a dozen of the practice balls in the tall grass. Then, after 18 I come back and hit them to remedy my problem shot of the day.

On pure practice days, I'll go with either woods and wedges, or my irons. Usually a medium-size bucket of 50-60 balls. Then, I'll have drive-by sessions for chipping and putting when I am on the way home and practice for a half-hour. Sometimes, it takes me two weeks to get through the "W.W - C.P - irons - C.P" cycle. On pure practice days, if I start losing my concentration, I stop early.

Also, I do swing drills and putting at home, and one of my gym workouts is a golf strength package from the Titleist MyTPI website.

The whole idea is to pick up the clubs at least twice a week and "do something." This is the first time I've played regularly since 2004, and I'm trying to get my swing stabilized. (Got new clubs too)

I'm practicing every single day, but I want to ask, how many balls you hit? I mean, how many balls you hit with the driver, 3w, long irons, short irons, wedges? I usually hit 80 balls in the range and then chipping a putting and then at least 9 holes.

Cheers!

I read somewhere that it takes hitting about 7,000 balls to permanently groove one swing change. It depends how much time you have and how many balls you can afford to hit and what your level of commitment is. Usually I can only afford to hit one or two buckets of balls (about 100-110 balls per bucket) when I go, and that's usually all I have time for. Unfortunately.

My practice regimen sucks.

Right now with a full time job, I usually do this:

Monday

Work 7AM-5PM
Play 9 holes, playing 3 balls at once and practicing short shots, bunker, putts, etc.

Tuesday-Friday

Work 7AM-5PM
Driving Range for 2 hours (90% wedges 100yds and in, the rest mid irons and a handful of drivers)
Putt til dark

Saturday-Sunday

9AM-12PM Driving Range, 90% wedges and pitch shots
12PM-4PM Practice green, 60% putting 40% chip shots
4PM-Dark Play golf until I can't see

I have completely rededicated myself to improving right now though, so I obviously have sacrificed other things to be able to do this.

Here's what most people I see on the practice range do:

2 times a week - hit balls for about 20 minutes, 90% drivers (usually that's the first thing they hit)
Play 18 holes once a week

That's about it, no time on the putting green except maybe a handful of putts before playing. I understand that's probably all the time they have alloted for golf in their lives, but it does show the significant difference in practice time people can have for the game.

    • Day 24 9-7 Worked on lower body movement with full swing. Focused on hips. Need to work on setup a bit. Was hoping to get to the short game area today, stayed home and recorded some swings instead. I've come to the conclusion I learn the most with my practice setup at home, just a net and a hitting strip. Overall happy with the progress this week.
    • Day 2 (September 7), still with the grip and the medicine ball (using weights).   Still on vacation and really aching to be able to do a full practice the way I'd be able to at home.  Also bought a 1/2" section of pipe today at the hardware store and have been regularly practicing the grip with that too while watching Sunday football with the family.
    • Day 1: Worked on feels for wedge swings. Primarily getting everything to move from the top of the backswing in the correct sequence.
    • Day 6 (7 Sep 25) - Afternoon pitch session with the 54 and 58 in the backyard. Keys: Alignment - Setup - Smooth swing thru - working on each to be as “automatic” as possible - not mindless, but deliberately repeatable. I have found the precision required to properly execute carries well into the full swings.
    • 180% is the threshold. But yeah, many of them are close to 200%. Not 120 and 123%. People generate speed differently. I think your speed will come more easily when this stuff gets sorted out. Stay disciplined. Stay on the road. You can't get off exit 74 before you hit exit 32.
