With shrinking local budgets, Muni courses are going to be under attack. Cities will look to sell them off (making them expensive), or even close them and sell the land to developers for instant cash plus future tax revenues.

Besides all of their service programs, the USGA provides sorely needed lobbying for our hobby. The NCGA (Northern California Golf Association) and many other regional associations do this as well.

Anyone know the earliest I can renew to get the Pebble Beach hat? I already have the Bethpage one (from when I renewed for 2008-2009), but I can't wait to wear the Pebble one.

I received a surprise new member packet in the mail a few days before Christmas.  The holiday came and went, and no one fessed up to buying it for me, so I emailed them.  Here is what they had to say:

Quote:

Yes this was a gift membership.  Unfortunately I can not tell who purchased this for you.  Enjoy the gift membership!

And so, the mystery remains unsolved...

Yup. I keep the bagtag and give the usually less-than-stylish hat to my dad. I just like supporting the organization.

Just recieved the package for joining for the first time. I wanted the rule book especially. Already leaned something I didn't know, so It's worth it to me.

I ordered a Chicken and an Egg on the Internet, to find out which came first... I'll keep you posted!

I've been a member since I started golfing - mostly for the perks of getting a rule book and enhanced options for getting Open tickets, but there have been some good points made here about financially supporting the organization that supports the game.

But don't you pay that money to whatever local club or organization you have your handicap through? I don't think USGA sees any of that money (unless the local organizations kick money in to USGA on a per-member basis... not sure...)

I didn't think the USGA made much money from memberships. You get a hat and a rulebook. The cost/postage must eat up a big chunk of the $20 dues. If that doesn't do it, salaries to the staffers must eat up the rest. I like getting the hat.I usually lose it by year's end and am ready for the next one.

Ive been a USGA member since '00.  When I started getting serious about golf I decided it was time to support the USGA.
