so i was on the range yesterday, hitting the ball really well. i'm trying to gain some distance on my irons and recently starting using my right leg to push into the shot, which has helped a lot. but my problem is, i noticed i was hitting my 8 iron way over my old average ( old: 140-150; yesterday: 160-170). ball flight is the same, but i do notice the ball leaves the face much faster. it was nice having gained yardage but now instead of having a good 10 yard difference between each club, i fear that this change could mess with my club selection.

any one else who had a the same experience? your input is greatly appreciated.

This morning on the range, I was flying over the markers that I usually hit with certain clubs. I noticed that the hitting area was moved way up and it was quite warm outside. Just some considerations; not saying you aren't hitting it longer.

i know what you mean, the conditions play a big difference. this range is right next to Los Angeles Community College. its a 3 story, 200 yard range ( like a giant birdcage). if your on the first floor, they have a marker in the center of the end fence about 2nd floor height, and that is supposed to be 250. of, course thats not always accurate. there are yardage markers along the right and left of the range(50,75,100,120,150,170 and 200 being the end fence).

I've had days at the range when I've seemingly magically picked up a club length in distance; it usually doesn't translate to the course. You're probably better off hitting the same club you always would given the particular distance on the course until you're sure that you really are hitting it farther constantly. The last thing you need to be doing is standing over your ball wondering if you've got the wrong club in your hands.

It's not unusual for yardage to fluxuate from time-to-time, condition-to-condition, etc. Range markers are also notorious liars. I'm a long hitter and I'll say, it's very easy and fun to take less club...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe you picked up those Callaway irons recently? Callaway irons are usually geared lower, so a 9 might play like a standard 8. If so, you might feel a new gap between your PW and your wedges. Kudos on the Nicklaus leg action, although it sounds like your right leg could be more passive.

If I couldn't control it, I would rather hit the ball a bit further now and then. If I'm 150 yards from the green, pull out my 8i and it suddenly flies 170 I'll be in trouble. 20 yards short will leave me with a much simpler shot.

I've had some moments where everything clicks and the ball flies wonderful and a bit further. I use to think it's how the good players hit the ball and that I might hit it consistently some day.

i've had these irons for about 2 years. i demo'd the x-22 s the other day. i would have to stick with the x-20's. i've gotten really comfortable with them and feel very confident hitting them. i only wish my ft-5 head wouldn't make the sound of an aluminum bat...

thanks for the tip about keeping my leg more passive. i'll try it out next time.

    • Thanks and it already has! Like I said, the last three months of my season were the best golf I've ever played. I'm within the realm of "this is fun for me" now. It was super tough grinding thru that break 90 consistently zone where I just kept hitting the toe, I kept popping up and out of every shot, getting steep. I am one of those guys doomed to shoot 95 forever if I don't really put a lot of work in, and I just wasn't gonna go out like that. My goal is definitely to get to that point of playing lots of courses and stuff like you are, but it's been the right thing for me to focus on developing a better motion. The amount of gym work too I've had to do? I see a DPT with TPI level 2 certification twice a week. I'm in the gym five days a week. The sun zaps the crap out of me for the gym too and I need that energy for all the other things I do on top of this stuff. I'm not really trying to become scratch either tho that would be nice! I'm just enjoying the puzzle that is golf, trying to overcome its challenges in an efficient and smart way. I'm very aware of the physical limitations I'm fighting so this summer has been continuing to address those with a good therapist.  But that's awesome, my goal is to get out there and enjoy new courses, play more rounds, just like you're doing! We'll see how this season goes, but I might be near doing that, if I'm not there already. I was only losing like one ball a round over those last three months or so, which is great for me on these sometimes tricky Florida courses.
    • Good luck and I hope it all pays off for you.  I play in 2 year round stroke play tournament leagues.  I enjoy it, love the competitiveness and enjoy both groups and playing different courses every week.  My goals these days is not to be come a scratch player but to shoot under my age.
    • 😄! I'm not kidding, man! The summers here are pretty rough! I'm not playing at sunrise or sunset though! Seriously, I brought a buddy of mine out for a round in June and he's normally good at handling heat and even he was like "yea this isn't very fun" after about 9 holes.  Keep in mind, I'm not really "playing," either. I'm grinding on the range, making my swing better. It's not nearly so bad if all you are doing is playing and riding a cart, never trying to change your golf swing. But that's not how I experience golf. For me it's like 5 range sessions for every round? It's just how I like doing it, I don't like ingraining my bad move by playing a lot of rounds. And keep in mind, this is a luxury for me. I've played non-stop for three straight years, working on my swing. It's definitely trickier grinding the range in these conditions. And I needed a mental break from it too. My dad for example, he plays thru the hot summer conditions, but he never gets lessons, never works on his game. It's just rounds for him, usually at sunrise. He never gets better. I've decided to take a different path than him in this game. The months away are good for me to do something else because disciplined practice, really thinking about what I'm doing, and trying to change things can be mentally tiring.
    • Geez!!! You were born in 1983.  I was born in 1946, live in SE Texas where we have had 105+ head index all summer and I have played at least 3 days a week all summer long.  I have played all over Florida both summer and winter.  The breezes there seem to be much better than the still heat we have.
