So I noticed a lot of you guys buy clubs (im talking about irons) on ebay, or some other online retailer. My question is, does fitting the clubs not come into the equation and playing the clubs the way they come is how you do it?

Im stressing over here about getting fitted and you guys with like 4 handicaps are buying clubs over the internet. Makes me wonder if fitting is all that important now.

Unless of course, you guys get them adjusted after you purchase them...?

Thanks a lot guys, this forum has been a HUGE help to me. I finally have some friendly people to answer my billion questions!

Thanks!

Jim

For me, my swing is such a work in progress that getting fitted now would be pointless. I'm 5'11" so standard length works perfect for me. I just buy standard lie, loft and length clubs with regular flex (except wedges). When and if I get to the point where my swing is consistent and I'm somewhat happy with it, I'll either buy fitted clubs or get my current clubs fitted for me.

hey i will chim in again for you here dude

Driver - ebay used, I put a new shaft in it (well I didn't put it was professionally installed) - $145 + $90 shaft = $234, retail = $450
Irons - ebay NEW - not fitted, stock everything - just put on GP New Decade grips = $300, retail =$800
Wedges - traded my TM RAC's for them to a buddy - again used = RAC's were $98 new, Vokeys are $140 new
Putter - also off the shelf - $98, retail is $200

There you have it $800 for my gear, w bag is $950

Keep in mind, many guys here also do their own club-building from components. So they might see a club on eBay with the head they want, and they already have the shaft and grip they want, so they buy it just for the head. The shaft might go to a friend, or back onto ebay as a pulled shaft, and so on. Some of us know our measurements and can keep an eye for them - we know how long the shaft should be, or if we're standard in a given brand, or whatever. For example, I have no problems hitting standard-length hybrids or woods for most brands, and I've already got the irons I want. I just earlier paid for my first won club on eBay - a standard length hybrid with the shaft I wanted. Still others might just make adjustments to their swing with different clubs. For example, if you need an inch under standard, but can stand a slightly stiffer shaft than a given flex states, you could get regular length and grip down on the club an inch (the "AK grip"). Finally, club-fitting starts to matter less as you get better. Now, someone who makes a living playing the game, or who plays competitively otherwise, will always get the right fit clubs. But, to use an extreme example, Tiger could take clubs built for his niece and still beat most, if not all, of us. But you, north of 25 handicap, can't expect your brain to remember how to make a good swing if you don't reward a good swing with a good result, and part of that is having the right clubs that will produce that for you. This forum was a huge help to me when I was a developing golfer, and I'm happy to pay it forward (assuming my words are useful).

be careful on ebay, i just got screwed. I bought some X-20's with a stiff flex, because the flex specifically said stiff, and they came in today, and they were uniflex. Talking about pissing me off. I wanted the guy that sold me these clubs standing there so i could wrap the clubs around his neck, I was fuming. Reason being is i was really looking forward to my new irons, as i was going to use them on friday, now i'm back to my POS Acumarks.

You know, eBay does have a policy about what happens when you get an item and it isn't as described. This certainly qualifies.

At most golf stores and pro shops you can take any clubs in and get them fitted, and the shop will charge you a fee for that service.

Using EBAY often allows you to buy the clubs and even if you don't get a "free" fitting like you do when you buy at a retail store, you can pay the fee and often times still come out having paid less than you would at a retail shop - sometimes by substantial margins. Just make sure that you are very careful on EBAY - make sure the seller has a lot of feedback (i.e. at least a few thousand just to be on the safe side) and that the feedback is at least 99%+ positive. And never buy anything where the location is China. If you order clubs off of EBAY, once you get them, you can also call the manufacturer and have them verify that the serial number is real (or ask the seller for the serial number prior to buying if you want to be extra cautious).

One good thing about Ping irons is that after you are fitted, and know what color dot you need, just keep your eye out for the color system.

I went to my local pro shop to be fitted several years ago and found that standard specs work for me, so I have no issue buying "off the shelf" from eBay. I would recomend getting fitted, and if standard specs work, you have a lot of options for purchasing clubs.

Also keep in mind that not all manufacturers standard specs are the same. Nike standard length iron probably isn't the same as TaylorMade.

I would deffinately get fitted to see what type of loft, lie you need and shaft length. Once you have that you can get what you want and what will work and later on down the road if you need a stiffer shaft or what not you can get fitted for that. I really benefitted from getting fitted before I bought my AP2's. I was playing Cobra SS-I's before and I knew they were longer but I thought the lie was standard, come to find out they were 2* upright so I learned to play upright and thats what my AP2's are now.
