There is a difference, like you said. In golf, the spectators are all quiet, and most are close enough to hear anything you might yell out. It's not like he says it under his breath most of the time.

I'm going to guess after his round when he time to think about it he's probably a little embarrassed. I would agree he doesn't get points for being a gentleman or a well mannered player. Then again, maybe he doesn't care in the least.

Personally I just want guys to be themselves. I would get mad at times but like I said I don't anymore. It's immature in my opinion and it won't help you. Maybe he'll discover that one day. Of course the difference for me is I was able to remind myself that I'm not a pro, I'm not going to hit what I want every time so don't bother getting mad about it. I'm sure his expectations are different. Plus, who wants to golf with someone who bitches all day? I remember a little while back this guy got grouped into our 3 to make 4. He was awful. Just a rancid swing. He would hit a terrible shot often and get really mad. I mean, even his good shots were terrible. But he was just so frustrated I'm not sure how he had fun. Not sure what his expectations were but with his swing he was never going to be anywhere near decent or consistent. He got annoying pretty fast. Luckily he was gone after 9 holes. Also, with Tiger, I've heard him get mad in non-vulgar ways before. I think hes been really frustrated lately.

They weren't covered like Tiger. Every single shot of Tiger's is put on TV. And replayed. TV coverage is much more broad now.

true, but the thing is,

NOBODY throws temper-tantrums as much as he does, period. yes some of them will throw a little tantrum every once-in-a-while, but Tiger does it EVERY SINGLE ROUND . the swearing doesnt really bother me, its the club tossing that bothers me. i did that when i was a kid, not as an adult. its childish. I've been to MANY tournaments over the years and followed a lot of pros and the fact is, NOBODY throws as many temper-tantrums as Tiger does. im tired of watching him pout whenever he doesnt hit a perfect shot

NOBODY

You're not content with just saying "I don't like him" so much that you have to go and make up a bunch of bullshit now? There's no way you can prove (or I can disprove) the silly crap you listed. Tiger throws "temper tantrums" every round? Bullshit. And I love how people have taken to saying "club throwing," which is a helluva lot different than slamming a club against a bag or the ground. When did he last actually throw a club? Does he do that EVERY SINGLE ROUND too? Hell no. And how can a temper tantrum last one or two seconds? Tiger gives himself ten steps or ten seconds to fume, and then he forgets it and he's on to the next shot.

I don't care if you don't like Tiger's "temper tantrums," but don't make shit up to support your viewpoint. Christ.

Though you've made a good point (that exaggeration doesn't suit anyone), calm down, Butchie.

Who is going to throw a temper tantrum when stuff goes their way. It is impossible to throw a tantrum every round. People on this website like to throw their opinions around as fact. What is a temper tantrum? I find his pouting just as bad. Obviously it is something different to everyone.

Glad you agree with me that exaggeration has no point in this discussion.

I don't care if you, or RocketSauce, or anyone else doesn't like Tiger, his clubs, his temper, his fist pumping - don't care. Just don't make stuff up to support your opinion.

Yes, I've met a few guys like this out there, throwing tantrums yet possessing a pretty pathetic swing. Who do they think they are kidding? You really, seriously, wonder why such "golfers" continue to play the game. This sounds harsh, but some people like this deserve it IMHO, because they affect the enjoyment and play of others. A much better attitude would be to congratulate himself on the (albeit rare) decent shot and work on increasing its frequency.

To me, bad behavior is bad behavior, no matter how good or bad a person is at a particular sport. I didn't excuse McEnroe and I don't excuse Tiger, although again I don't think Tiger is anywhere near as bad as Mac was in his day and I'm taking this as written to a certain extent. As someone already mentioned, an important criterion is if another competitor's play is significantly affected by your shenanigans. IMO that was sometimes the case with McEnroe (and once or twice you could tell that his opponent was getting p****d at his antics), but I don't think that's the case with Tiger. On the contrary, a player sees Tiger starting to show overt signs of anger, he knows that things aren't going so well for numero uno. That would be a GOOD thing to witness (upt to a point I suppose). If Tiger throws a hissy fit at the Buick I will have to contact Mr T and the A Team to do a job on you, Butch, and Tiger- as you re just perpetuating his moronic and uncouth behaviour...and you wonder why you and Tiger have a negative reputation!

I'm not sure he's cleaned it up all that much. My daughter and I watched him run through a succession of lip-read swear words earlier this year, at the Players, I believe, surprised the cameras stuck with him as he was walking and muttering "F***, G**D****, SOB", one right after the other. Mind you, she's 16 and she and I laughed, though she would prefer he didn't spout like that, and I guarantee everybody in earshot could hear him, so I wasn't too impressed by that.

I believe he's concerned enough about his image that he probably thinks about toning it down, just also believe when he's in his "zone" of competition, he forgets. Hopefully, he'll get it all under control.

Was at a junior tournament recently and got a kick out of all the boys looking very "Tiger/Nike" -- an example of how he has positively influenced kids to participate and look "professional", but you have to figure they catch all aspects of his persona, which is a legitimate concern.

It's probably been said already but I didn't feel like going through and reading every reply. For those that bring the children into it... I would be willing to bet that most of those same children hear far worse coming out of the own parent's or parent's friend's mouths than a few choice words that Tiger may throw around. Is that an excuse for Tiger, no, but I always get a laugh when people want to bring up the children's ears, as if the children out here aren't hearing it anywhere but from a professional athlete.

Jim Furyk hits a shot on the 335-yard par four that winds up in the rough just short and left of a greenside bunker. His reaction? Slam the club down twice and yell "GOD!" (at which point the mic may or may not have been cut off).

I didn't see Tiger misbehaving yesterday in his round of 71, and yet here's another of the many examples of other pros having "antics" of the negative variety.

And I don't care that Jim did it, either. Good to see him not acting like a robot, frankly. He'd just doubled the par-five 13th.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Tiger has taken a lot of heat lately and I believe he is making an effort to chill a little bit. If Tiger was coming down the back 9 at Augusta with a chance to win and hit it in the Bunker on 18, and had a bad reaction, no one would care. It happens after every shot that is a little off. Some pros are even complaining when they hit it pin high and five foot left, its just annoying. Anyway congrats to Tiger for a very solid round and lets see if he can run away with a tourney like the old days.

Here's Tiger's problem: When Furyk did that, it jumped off the screen as atypical. The announcers, specifically Nobilo, mentioned it. It earned singling out here.

An identical Tiger tantrum would have blended in, with all the hundreds of examples preceding it.

And it's your opinion that it's wrong. That's not my opinion. Heck, I was glad to see a little fire from Jim. He hasn't won in awhile. I'd like to see a bit more fire from him, truth be told.

And again: I don't dislike when Tiger does it. My kid knows it's wrong, I don't behave like that around her, but Tiger's not my kid's parent.

And apparently golf can be frustrating at times - in a non-major, not even a big-time event here - that someone who is normally pretty calm like Jim Furyk can be captured having "antics" from time to time.

I agree!! The tour needs more fire. Tiger has it and thats why he wins. Furyk needs more of it. Along with many others.

A cousin of mine boasts about having every magazine cover Woods has appeared upon. I find it strange that a reformed punk and current coal miner has a favorite athlete like Tiger Woods and prefers the Yankees above all other sports teams, but that is the society we live in today. Media and fanbase do not reward the best person on the tour, merely the best athlete.

Why is that strange? How does a persons backstory and current profession have anything to do with which athlete he favor? Why should the media reward the "best person", a term I'd be interested to hear how you judge by, by the way. Would've been pretty boring if all the media and fans praised a single person, being the highest ranked player that behaves like some people here expect.

I love watching players like Furyk and Els have a tantrum. Not that I enjoy their misery, but it shows emotions.

    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
