Heys guys this is my first post but have been looking and reading through alot of threads.

I would appreciate it if you all could take a look at my swing, may not be the best videos but I have been having a problem with coming over the top and with a outside to in swing causing me with a nice little fade. It's ok with my irons but once I get up to my driver and 3 wood I have a more of a problem trying to control it.

I appreciate anything you have to say and I have been self taught from the internet and a few friends that play on the golf team in college. They try to help but thanks for everything....

Your legs look very straight and your back looks to hunched over. You're also coming over the top.

Yea I've noticed I have been coming over the top due to the fade I have been hitting and the outside to in divot I have been taking...What could I do to stop coming so much over the top and get on a straight plane with the ball???

And thanks for taking a look at my swing. First time I have ever really looked at it...

Ok... Yea I just watched a few Anthony Kim videos and noticed that how he keeps his right elbow tucked in. I got some kind of chicken wing thing going on. I guess baseball and softball is finally creeping in on me...

I watched the first two videos only, here are my thoughts on each.
Video 1: Once you've reached the top of your backswing, you first turn your hips, which also causes your shoulders to open. Your swing angle is now outside-in. You compensate by leaving your wrists open, which means slice. Your hips should not open until the club has already come through and made contact. I can't tell if you're trying to hit the ball through that opening in the treeline, but if so, you're stance is closed.
Video 2: On your backswing, you sway back (moving your weight on your right foot). This means that you have to shift your body back to center in order to get back to your proper contact point (pinching the ball). Do you have problems randomly hitting the ball fat/thin/fat/thin? If so, this is likely the cause. Your head shouldn't move laterally like that.

I appreciate that... I strike the ball really good I may top one every now and then when I swing to hard. But my head should stay centered during the whole swing and hips should only open up until contact has been made.

I appreciate the feedback. I just need stuff pointed out to see what I need to fix.

If your downswing was on the plane that your takeaway was on you would be on the button. Your swing is exact opposite of what you want going off video one, so your coming way over the top

What helped me to not come over the top and swing more on an in to out swing path is that I would hit a few balls with my driver with my body pointing left of the target line(a closed stance) and then I would use that feeling of swinging on an in to out path and try to incorporate it with my normal stance

Yeah, in video 2 it looks like you are swaying way too much to the left on your backswing. You should be turning your shoulders/chest, which should rotate the hips naturally, without swaying off center, your back facing the target. Ensure the right knee retains it's flex on the backswing.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

There are some similarities between your swing and my old swing, so I noticed some things right away.

You are athletic. Your instinct in to hit the ball from the start of the downswing (baseball influence). You hit a fade and have compensated with a strong grip.

The first thing to work on is the take away. Your club head gets almost behind your body during the take away. Keep it in front of you to about 9 o'clock, then swing up and back (difficult to explain to I'll try to post a good example video)

Because you take the club too far inside on the back swing, when you correct it by lifting up and wrist cocking, you cross the line at the top, which then results in the over the top move. The over the top move then leads to the chicken wing and crowding of the ball at impact.

Your weight transfer is a bit out of sync. When you throw the club out at the beginning of the down swing(over-the-top move), your body weight transfer from legs to torso to shoulders gets out of sync (resulting in the off balance finish position)

Quite a bit of swaying both side to side and up and down throughout the swing.

Bottom line
Very athletic swing, with your good eye-hand coordination you have learned to control a power fade that probably goes a mile.

work on the take away and club position at the top. Slow it down a bit with the arms at the beginning of the forward swing. Forward swing starts in legs/gluts--->core--->shoulders then finally wrist uncocking through the ball.
This is difficult to learn (struggling with it now)

I chose Stuart Appleby because he has a similar build

notice on the video that from 27-31 seconds in the video that he keeps his hands "infront of his body" He pushes the club back instead of initially turning it around his body.

uttexas i appreciate it, thats some really helpful feedback. I'm going to try and work on my take back and my downswing and just working to keep my club on plane. I want to work on keeping my legs and core with less sway but when I did that earlier I felt real stiff and flat footed. But my just have to work on it until I find a position that is comfortable.

I really hope this takes a turn for the best and my if I lucky get to where I can my draw it around some of those dogleg rights...

    • In driving a car you have all sorts of random or variable parts, though. Different speeds, corners, conditions, size of turns… even different cars and sizes, different traffic and laws (lights, signs, etc.). I don't think I've seen anyone doing "block practice" to practice the same exact turn 100 times, then trying it in the real world.
    • IMHO, block practice is good. Any new motor pattern or a 'move' has to be committed to muscle memory and be reproducable at command without conscious thought as the final goal. I don't see how this is that much different than learning how to drive a car, or let's say how to handle the steering for example. One must do it enough times and then also do it in different situations to commit to all layers of brain - judgment of demand, decision making, judgment of response and finally execution. Unless each layer is familiar of each of their role in the specific motor move, it is not truly learned and you will simply fall back to the original pattern. I think the random practice is simply committing the learned pattern to different scenarios or intervals of time to replicate in the real world (actual rounds). It breeds further familiarity learned from block practice. Steer the car a hundred times to learn the move (block) and then drive the car all over town to make it real world (random) to a level of maturity. I don't see how block and random have to be in conflict with each other.  
    • Yea, I think the first thing is to define block, variable, and random practice with regards to golf.  The easiest one might be in practicing distance control for putting. Block practice would be just hitting 50 putts from 5 feet, then 50 putts from 10 ft then 50 putts from 15 ft. While random practice would having a different distance putt for every putt.  In terms of learning a new motor pattern, like let's say you want to make sure the clubhead goes outside the hands in the backswing. I am not sure how to structure random practice. Maybe block practice is just making the same 100 movements over and over again. I don't get how a random practice is structured for something like learning a new motor pattern for the golf swing.  Like, if a NFL QB needs to work on their throw. They want to get the ball higher above the shoulder. How would random practice be structured? Would they just need someone there to say, yes or no for feedback? That way the QB can go through an assortment of passing drills and throws trying to get the wright throwing motion?  For me, how do you structure the feedback and be time effective. Let's say you want to work on the club path in the backswing. You go out to the course to get some random practice. Do you need to set up the camera at each spot, check after each shot to make it random?  I know that feedback is also a HUGE part of learning. I could say, I went to the golf course and worked on my swing. If I made 40 golf swings on the course, what if none of them were good reps because I couldn't get any feedback? What if I regressed? 
    • I found it odd that both Drs. (Raymond Prior and Greg Rose) in their separate videos gave the same exact math problem (23 x 12), and both made the point of comparing block practice to solving the same exact math problem (23 x 12) over and over again. But I've made the point that when you are learning your multiplication tables… you do a bunch of similar multiplications over and over again. You do 7 x 8, then 9 x 4, then 3 x 5, then 2 x 6, and so on. So, I think when golf instructors talk about block practice, they're really not understanding what it actually is, and they're assuming that someone trying to kinda do the same thing is block practice, but when Dr. Raymond Prior said on my podcast that what I was describing was variable practice… then… well, that changes things. It changes the results of everything you've heard about how "block" practice is bad (or ineffective).
    • Day 121 12-11 Practice session this morning. Slowing the swing down. 3/4 swings, Getting to lead side better, trying to feel more in sync with swing. Hit foam balls. Good session overall.
