Oh... Now it's starting to come out. Changed from 72 to 74. The course rating is 64. We're getting closer. I plugged that into a rough calculator and it spit me out a 16.5.

How did you get 16.5? I got 10.0 as handicap for shooting 74 on the course rated 64.4 with the slope of 108.

The USGA calc says, if you have less than 7 rounds, your handicap is simply your best single round (differential). (74 - 64.4) * 113/108 * 0.96 = 9.64.

My personal guess is, maybe the guy has natural talent, but that the course he's playing is chock full of 360 yard par 4's and 125 yard par 3's, not a bunker or tree to be found, and the guy can smack a tee ball decently. That, or he's flat full of shit.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

After some investigation, there aren't many courses near Salyersville, KY. There's a course in Ashland called Sandy Creek that is rated 64.4/108 from the blues at a whopping 5500 yards. It's got seven par 4's that play less than 350. I've got money says this is the course, and I'm not sure the specs do it justice in properly quantifying how easy it is.

I'm going to use that one! My best out of the last seven is almost always better than my average. Single digits here I come! I kid, I kid...

oh yeah, that;s right I forgot about the .96 multiplier. So he probably is a 9.6, technically.

If he shot a legit 74, yeah.

This is the internet. He could be a 5 handicap after only one week if he wanted to.

Give the kid a break! Maybe he misunderstands a few things, no need to jump all over him / call him a liar / claim it could never happen.

I actually think after reading this thread the kid has done well now it seems the whole story has come out.
We have a 9 hole course here measuring only 4700 yds,but it's greens are small, and it has lots of elevation and a couple of huge carries.I'm not a long hitter but an average one.Longest hole is 475 and I can reach this in 2.The par 4's are 400 down to 258 and I reckon if my short game was brilliant I could get round it going on my length at this course,in 66-70.Par is 66.
He said he had been playing every day and 5500 yds is not long so if he has the touch then he must have been hot that day and I remember he said he usually shoots high 80 to 90.

Yeah he has over estimated his handicap but we were all 16 once and wanted to be taken seriously so well done mate even on a short course you have to get the job done.

What so unusual....?

i had to take a few looks at this and even compare it to the OP's post to actually get it... lol...

back to the topic... i think you need to play a few more rounds to get a more accurate look at your true handicap... i played with a buddy of mine that i know is a bogey golfer... even he knows he's a bogey golfer at best... but we played a relatively tough course and he kicked my ass... had a career round and his first time ever breaking 80... shot 6 over... everything came together that day for him... since then he hasnt been that low... so i think its possible that you shot a low score... but like others have said... doing it on a consistent basis is the hard part... hell the past few rounds ive had i didnt break 90 and was afraid i wasnt going to break 100... keep posting scores and let us know how its going
RUSS's avg drive - 230yrds and climbing

I agree, good for him. But it's not the phenomenal claim he seemed to be making initially. I think we were all under the impression that he was claiming to shoot E on a championship length course.

Yeh stonecrest is a much much harder course. I am willing to predict that i wouldn't shoot below a 90 on it. A few of you are misunderstanding me though, my intial reason for posting this is to see if dick's calculator may be incorrect or if the fact that i only have logged 6 rounds in their database was the reason for my sudden drop in handicap. I am in no way saying im already a pro or can beat 90% of players. I realize that there are many aspects to golf i havent even discovered and am humble to any more experienced golfer's suggestions. I did however play the course honestly and kept my score correctly. I posted simply because of my excitment. I had no clue i would recieve as much negetive feeback though.

yes CONGRATS bro!

Thanks for the postive comment. Like i said, im not claiming to be a pro already i was just wondering if that was correct. And yes i have been playing on a somewhat easy course but it does have par 3s, 4s, and 5s. I am somewhat sure my handicap will raise as i add more rounds but until then i will enjoy my scores.

Well you're original post come off like you were maybe bragging abit, but after further investigation, and by your reply here, sounds like the 9.6 is wrong.

Anyways, sorry for the negative feedback, but I've been playing golf for 15yrs and I'm barely a 9.5 handi, ..that's when I'm playing alot.

Don't lose your enthusiasm, just remember have fun, and it's not all about your handicap, specially when your a beginner. Learn the game//rules/etiquitte, etc, then worry about your handicap, and unless your entering tournaments, you don't even need to keep your GHIN.

You're exactly correct. There are very few trees, 2 around 150 yard par 3's and only one water hazard and no bunkers.

there are quiet a few around here they just arent registered online. There is a course in west liberty ky (the one i shot a 74 on) one in paintsville, one in prestonsburg (stonecrest golf course) and an executive course in prestonsburg also. all within 30 minutes of my house

I will for sure. I am truely addicted to golf and would like to possibly play in college, hence me practicing every day since i first picked up a club. I will update my handicap weekly as i input more rounds into the database. i appreciate all the responses that cared enough to give me a 2nd thought instead of calling bs and going on, i was beginning to think all golfers were just naturally douchebags, lol.

Hey, don't let the negative comments here get to you. If I was in your shoes, I probably would have thought my handicap was 9.6 also.

I am sure some people didn't mean to be so negative had they known all the facts.

Anyway, it is great that you shot 74 even on a par 64 course. It shows that you have more talent than most people. Keep practicing and maybe you'll make it to the big league. If you do, don't forget the little guys like us.

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
