I am having quite a bit of trouble using irons off the ground. It seems like they all go about the same distance when I actually do hit them well. I know your suppose to hit through the ball so basically aim for a spot hea of the ball but i am not consisiant at all. If anyone can give any tips on how to use irons with consistency and gradual distance changes for each club.I am not trying to hit them really far but to just have a good straight change in disstance or each.

Hit down on the ball and take a divot. Thinking about that single aspect helped me out a good amount

what he said ^.. a drill to help you with that would be putting a penny or tee a couple inches infront of the ball, and focus on hitting the tee or penny and just let the ball get in the way, use that for awhile then it will just become natural

Those are all good points. When I broke into a single digit handicap, it was an ahah moment with my iron play. For me, it was eliminating excess movement in my swing. I focus on a simple turn back and turn through.

Another thing that helped me recently was I had too much movement in the legs and feet. I started concentrating on keeping my feet, for the most part, planted during the backswing and downswing. I just have a slight movement of my left knee (I'm a righty). Then on impact and follow-through it's just a simple motion to the top of finish.

And definitely what Knockglock said as well. Once you figure that part of the iron out, you will see a difference in not only distance but trajectory as well.

I am going to guess that with a 36 handicap some of the advise is getting a little head of where you are at.

First I would look at club path. Are you striking the ball on the inside corner? That is a must before you consider the rest. Second for consistent contact I have found that keeping your head as still as possible throughout the swing will help tremendously. Keep you head down until long after the ball is gone.

Good luck report back.

You just need to concentrate on making a good swing. Rotate around your center and follow through.

Start your down swing by turning your hips towards the target. That was the biggest thing that changed my iron game. It got my weight on my front foot, made me hit down on the ball and all that other fun stuff. Also, try making your backswing 75% of what you would normally. That's another tip that helped me a lot. I make much better contact and in turn the ball flys just as far and has given me confidence with irons (which I never had before).
