Just finished my Summer Reading.

I'm about to mess myself with happiness right now, and I'm bugging out, because I just finally finished my Summer Reading. Approx. 5 minutes ago I just finished To Kill a Mockingbird.

I still have to read about 20 pages of Oedipus Rex, but has anyone read To Kill a Mockingbird? That was easily one of the best books I've read.

excellent book.

Odipus rex on the other hand, I hated the book, the play and even the syndrom that has come out of it.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I didn't really like Oedipus. The very end was pretty funny. I actually couldn't believe it was a classic book. Hopefully, you won't have to read Antigone or any other Greek books. They're weird. I'm sure they're good, but they're weird as hell (read a SparkNotes on Medea...funny).
TKAM was pretty good. I read it when I was too young to really understand everything about it (political overtones, etc.), so I guess I missed out. Mr. Deeds has a strong reference to that book though.

Edit: Here's the link http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/medea/section10.rhtml . See if there's an online version of those lines. Read it and draw or think about the images that were described. Weird.

I read to kill a mockingbird in English class, didn't really enjoy it. It wasn't terrible, but I didn't think it was that great. But then again, I don't enjoy any books that I read in class (like as a class) or so it seems.

Speaking of summer reading I still have to do mine. I don't even know what the assignment is. I usually wait til the last few days.

My summer reading is case law. I wish it was To Kill a Mockingbird. Good book, fun movie. Oedipus Rex = sick book, hope there's no movie.

Certainly TKAMB is one of the most important novels of the last hundred years, but I sometimes think that it gets more publicity and plaudits than it deserves. I suppose it has a special place in the American education sector because it kills two birds with one stone (pun intended). That is, it's an enriching read and addresses an issue that's always at the forefront of American consciousness, race. But from the last century "Steppenwolf", "The Beautiful and Damned", "The Trial" "Midnight's Children and especially "The Outsider" have resonated with me on a much higher level. I recommend them to anyone looking for something to sink their teeth into!

I've never understood "summer reading", It's not a term that's ever used in this part of the world. Is it a school thing or something?

I also read To Kill a Mockingbird in English class (we got to watch the movie too). It's a good book but I think it suffers somewhat in that in its own time it hit a nerve and got people thinking but now the ideas it raises have become pretty standard fare. I can't really speak in an American context mind you so perhaps it's still more relevant there but that's just my opinion of it.

It's nice when you enjoy your summer reading. The last summer reading that I remember enjoying was Descartes. I can't remember enjoying any of the required books in high school. Of course, this summer, it isn't summer reading for me. And next summer is summer writing!
At school we can pick from hundreds of books that are on The List. Right now I'm reading "A Man Named David" by Dave Pelzer. So far, so great. I haven't said this since I was reading his first book, "A Child Called It", but I just can't put it down.

Did you pick his book because you thought it was the guy who wrote The Short Game Bible? Because that was my first thought when I saw that.

THE KITE RUNNER IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK!! For AP English I have to read American Dream, Billy Budd, and Amusing Ourselves to Death. Ughhhh
