$4 impact bag ...

Bought a $4 soft insulated lunch "bag" and filled it with a heavy plastic bag full of sand.

Granted you don't want to hit it very hard, but it does the job.

how much was the sand? wouldn't the cost of the sand mean the impact bag is more then $4?

Everybody's workshop has a old bag of sand lying around. If you don't have a workshop, you probably own a cat, so kitty litter would work too.

funny thing is that I have a workshop in the back of my garage, no sand, no cat, but I have kitty liter (works great to clean up oil spills)

ok, so I know WHAT an impact bag is, but I have a few questions.

What is it supposed to tell you, especially at home where you don't have a pro standing over your shoulder.

Will it damage my club from sudden impact?

Essentially you place it where you want to avoid the clubhead being. It can be behind the ball to work on lag, the inside in front of the ball to prevent out-to-in or the outside in front of the ball to prevent in to out.

One of the ideas behind it is that you can work on swing plane without someone watching you. Having an instructor seeing you hit a bag won't help, you can see that yourself.

uh, I'm pretty sure an impact bag is for making impact, not avoiding it. So you would be hitting it to actually check if your clubface is square when you are at impact. If your club is closed, the bag will rotate counter clockwise. If it is open, it will rotate clockwise. You simply just hit the bag.

No, that's completely wrong.

It's called an impact bag because you're supposed to IMPACT it with the clubhead. Which is why I can't imagine an impact bag filled with sand - cripes. You're supposed to fill them with socks or old cloths or something.

That may be the original point, but I've seen bags like that, used for the purposes I stated.

What do you learn and what is hitting the bag supposed to improve? I saw the video above, but he never really told what you want to achieve. Only thing I saw was that he demonstrated how you should not be at impact, usually a result of casting.
