60 Wedges

Are 60 degree wedges useful, some people I talk to take them outta their back some keep them in their bag and say they're very useful.

I just put mine back in the bag since I'm riding a cart tomorrow. Will see how the 60 works and if its worth carrying on regular rounds. I normally play only 12 clubs to keep the weight to a somewhat light.

Sounds like individual choice. I use mine often when I play, but then again, I am just learning the game.

I carried a 60* for a few seasons before going to a 58* this season. Love both clubs. Stops bone dead on the greens, great for tight pins. Also a good club for pitching around greens. Some people like lob wedges some don't, just a personal preference.

I liked mine at the driving range but as soon as i got on the course it was a different story,because I didnt trust myself to take a full swing when i needed to which ended up being extremely short of the green...but with enough practice I think they can come in handy.

I can't imagine playing without one. It's probably the single club I use most aside from the putter and driver.

I'm the same. I use it for all my shots 60 yards and in. I heard Annika say that Tiger converted her to doing the same thing because you can use one club for many different shots.

Plus, my 60 degree is a Cleveland with "zip grooves" that actually do what they are supposed to. Add a proV1 to the mix and I can actually get a ball to back up....juuust a little.

All of the top-line wedges are equal in quality. Try them all out and go with whichever one feels best to you. Performance-wise the newer Cleveland's, Titleist, etc. are all quite similar.

One recommendation: get a lob wedge with a "tour grind" sole, meaning the heel is ground down. My wedge does not have the "tour grind" and it makes finesse shots a lot more difficult because the heel catches on the ground.

I have on and use it many times during the round, most helpful over bunkers, and over obstacles and need to land and stop the ball.

I think the 60 has it's role, but the courses I play don't really require one. Additional a lot of the course I play will have pretty tight lies, which I find to be difficult to hit the 60 from. IMHO, I think having and using a 60 depends on how you like to hit approaches to the green and if the course conditions work.

I am just the opposite. Love tight lies…especially with my 60*. For me it is the most versatile club in my bag for just about every shot inside of 90 yards.

I carry a 58° (Titleist Vokey Spin milled with 8° bounce), not a 60°. Don't get a 60•° just because that what you hear talked about most often. The extra 2° lets you play slightly longer shots, makes the club slightly more forgiving, and for me at least just makes it a bit easier to play.

Also pay attention to the bounce on the one you get, they are available with several bounce and loft combinations. I wouldn't worry so much about the "tour grind" on your first LW. Get comfortable with it first then worry about the extra stuff. I found that the tour grind wedge that I tried out just made it easier to chunk from tight lies... that's just my experience.

My workhorse wedge is the 54 SW in my sig line. This is my go-to bunker, chipping, pitching and rough "explosion" shots. I'm in love with this wedge like none I've ever owned (thinking about ordering another to save for when I wear this one out). It's funny because I've had all the "premier" wedges before, but this one is the best I've owned.


All that being said.....there are certain cirmcumstances where I simply prefer to use a more lofted option.....enter the 64 LW from my sig line. This club is a nasty little affiar that is limited in scope but works very well when called upon.

I use this club on average about once per 9 holes.

Yesterday, for example, I was playing with my son on our home course....par3 number 6 Lake View playing 175 yds with a slight right-to-left wind coming off the right-side lake. I hit 4 hybrid, hoping the cut swing would hold it straight off the wind. I over cooked it a bit and carried past the stick but right of the greenside bunker.

I set up squarely with the LW and swung fully. The ball launched nicely up and dropped stone dead on the green, leaving a totally make-able 10 ft par putt (I missed....arghhhh).


Situations like this occur every so often.....for me, about twice a round.


I love my wedges and don't want to change a thing about the set up right now. Looking at the order of use with all my wedge shots:

1. SW = 70% of all wedge shots
2. PW = 15% of all wedge shots
3. GW = 10% of all wedge shots
4. LW = 5% of all wedge shots

I use my 60* all over the place. I hit it about 60 yards, I like to pitch with it around the greens and in deep rough, I can chip with it around the greens and keep it really low. I use it so much that I wonder sometimes if I'm missing out by not using my 56* or my 52* around the greens.

I love mine, just got a 60* Titleist Vokey Spin Milled wedge a couple of months ago to replace my old smoothed out one.

I carry a 50*, 56*, and 60* wedge in my bag. I suppose most of my shots are lost around the green so I like to have more "weapons" for that area.

It definitely took some time for me to get used to the club ... alot of times I would hit the club fat & dig it into the turf. It works good on tight lies, when I've short sided myself, and from the sand. Most of the time the ball lands soft & doesn't roll much; that's the benefit of it for me.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer ... just what works for YOU.
