Do most private clubs offer yardage books (or has GPS replaced that)?

I don't feel like shelling out $300+ for a GPS, but I'm playing in a tournament at a local private club (Edgewood Country Club in Michigan, if anyone's familiar with it). Do most private clubs have yardage books for members (i.e. is it the norm) or has the advent of GPS made that a thing of the past?

I would say yes, as that has been the case with the last several private clubs I have played. That is the case with most resort courses too.

In my experiences most of them do have yardages books. Generally they are not free usually somewhere between 6 and 10 dollars. Although the flipside is most country clubs are pretty good at marking the yardages.

They should. I would get one anytime I played a course for the first time. While their are plenty of people who have GPS and rangefinders, there are still times when people would be interested. High school or college events, junior events, state tournaments, they would keep them if they had to host a big event.

This might be a little old school, but could you just call the proshop and see if they have them?

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I am a member of a private club and the books are still available. They are not bad to have even if you have GPS because you can make notes on the greens slope and tiers and such.

only one course i have EVER played has one...and you have to print it from their website
its kinda handy, like said above as u can make notes on it
really like how they show the distance of the green from front to back...then you can choose a club according, based on pin location

I thought most courses had these. Without a GPS or rangefinder, how can you know which club to use? I buy a course guide on every course I play and use the guide all the time to see how far it's to bunkers, front edge of green etc. A good course will also tell you what the pin placement is, which can mean a club more or less on the approach. I keep the course guides as a souvenir of the course.

one course I played at in a junior event had no yardages on the sprinkler heads you had to have a yardage book to find the yardage that each sprinkler was.

Like one of the above posters, I've only ever seen one course which had a yardage book available, and that was years ago. I do play some upscale courses time to time, but I've never seen any of them lately with a book. Maybe I just don't see them because I don't look for them.

I don't really worry about it any more since I do have a rangefinder.
