I used to game one, but found that having a hybrid is a better alternative in most cases for me (out of the rough, even a 4 iron is tough to get good distance). If you've got good speed and strike the ball well you won't have a problem hitting it - it's just a matter of it being a club that will actually benefit you more than a hybrid or 5 wood (or another wedge).

I've never hit a 2 iron, but I did like the 3 iron in my old cheapo set. My new set has 3 and 4 hybrids and starts at a 5 iron, and at the moment I'm not having much luck with the hybrids.

My first set of custom clubs many years ago were built by this old guy using Golfsmith branded equipment. He managed to convince me to get a 1i added to the set. What a mistake that was. I used that club exactly twice.

The shop/guy i bought my 2i from thought i was bullsh.... him since he knew i just started golf back then, so i had to assure him if i ordered it, i wouldnt return it

. 2 things, like others stated before are important imo if you want to play a 2i. - You need a solid swing speed to start with - if you play senior shafts, a 2i might not be the best idea for you - Your swing has to be pretty flawless since every mistake is hugely aggrevated by such a delofted iron

When I was younger and before two back surgeries I had a set of Ping ISIs with a 2 iron. I could hit it but I would use a stronger grip to keep it straight. Now my 4 iron is my longest iron.

i have a 2 iron from my old ping isi set i put in the bag every now and then.

it isnt that diffcult to hit or control.. i prefer to play it off the tee as opposed to a 3 wood... and it goes nearly as far as my 3 wood does...

i rarely hit it off a tightly mowed fairway, unless i want to hit a shot low, long, and under a tree branch...

when i miss the sweet spot though, its usually quite nasty....

i hate hybrids.. im much more comfortable with a long iron in my hand, but everybody's different, what works for me may not work for you...

  • 12 years later...

I've only been playing since June, so I'm early on in my golf journey...

However, I've found I'm much more successful with my new :tmade: 2i UDI than any hybrid.  I'm not sure why.  As John Daly said, "I just grip it and rip it." 🤷‍♂️B-)

Except that there are far fewer 2I in bags now than 12 years ago. 🙂

I have an old 1 iron that I hit on occasion.  When I was younger and had club head speed, I could hit it well, generally off the tee.  But definitely not every time.  Modern 2 irons are easier to hit than older ones since they are more muscle backs than pure blades

I tried hitting an old steel shafted 2 iron that was laying on the ground at the course a few weeks ago, it went all of 5 feet off the ground and 50 yards straight into the woods.

I do have a traditional lofted 3 iron that I can hit ok when the moon is right, I've launched a few great looking low 200 yard drives with it. Today I used it off the tee on 3 holes and it got me in the fairway, 175 to 200 carry maybe. Wet ground so no rollout today. I don't have great swing speed and was just messing around on a solo practice round.

Remarkably, BOTH these things are true. :hmm:

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
