i would like to do my own research, and i was wondering if there has been a thread on this board that lists more or less all the GPS units that are out there on the market. if not, maybe we can make this thread into that list?

Why do you need a GPS ? Every course has 100 150 200 markers and you can learn how to interpolate based on 10 yard increments. In fact I don't even think about it anymore because I have developed an instinctive feel for which club to use just by looking at the flag and adjusting for terrain and wind.

What do you do if it's a dog leg or you hit badly hook a drive. How do you determine your yardage? I mean I'm sure you could "feel" it but I highly doubt you are dead on that often.

That's what I used to think--until I got "freecaddie" for my iphone. It makes a world of difference especially when you are slightly off the fairway and when the pin is in front or back.

Before, I only looked at 100, 150 markers to determine my club selection. Now, depending on whether the pin is in front or back, my club selection changes 1 or 2 clubs based on GPS. Made a hugh difference in getting it closer to the pin. Now my putting on the other hand--is another matter. No GPS can help with my putting. Arrrrrghhh.

If you have a smart phone, get one of those GPS programs. A lot cheaper and many don't have annual fees.

Why do Tiger and Phil need caddies to tell them how far away everything is? Because eyeballing, even for guys that have played a s much golf as the Pro's, is inherently inaccurate. And the markers on the course, even when accurate, don't provide enough information.

Also, not every course has 100, 150, and 200 yard markers. You don't think a GPS would help you? Fine, you can believe that if you want. But don't try to tell anyone else that it won't help them because you're are as wrong as can be. S-

Accurate yardages cannot easily be calculated using course distance markers which can sometimes be wrong in themselves.

Rough estimates are not good enough for this purpose.

Remember that from one iron to the next the difference in distance can be 9-14 yards which is not much at all.

If using course distance markers you are 5 or worse 10 yards out with your estimations you are overshooting the green or dropping short.
