I agree, i can not even count the amount of times I played on a team that shot in the 50's during a best ball... I played a 4 man Best Ball once and shot a -22 once... it was sick but we were all 0's...

I really think Soup has the right idea and the majority of you are twisting around what he is saying.

I think that by confronting rules officials you are making it his word against yours and who is to say you are right. It is just creating a problem and most times they will just keep his score and at the end of the day you have just blown it into a bigger problem. Confronting the individual is the best way to handle the situation in my opinion.

Certainly you may confront the individual, but you still must report the incident to the committee unless the player is willing to withdraw from the competition. You cannot allow a cheater to get away with cheating even if he is aware that you know about it.

Decision 1-3/6:

Should A, who knowingly overlooked the breach, be penalized? A. A should have been disqualified for a breach of Rule 1-3.

This does not apply solely to the marker, but to any fellow competitor who knowingly allows a breach to go unchallenged. Although it is often called "protection of the field" it is in reality a tacit agreement to waive a Rule of Golf, and is in breach of Rule 1-3.

Wow, I couldnt even bear reading the whole 11 pages of this thread, this guy SOUP is killing me. How is it childish to report someone for cheating??? It is very simple, my job in a tournament is to protect the field. I am going to play as hard as I can and I am not going to cheat... ever.. even the little things count.... knocking bark off a tree while taking a practice swing and my ball is right next to it.... it's a penalty and I will notify the others in my group about what happened. I am the only one responsible for my score. If I think I deserve a drop, I inform the guys in my group what my intentions are. If they don't think I deserve a drop, they can't tell me I can't do it. All they can do is INFORM THE RULES COMMITTEE when we get done and let them rule on it. If I think someone is cheating, I will notify the right people when we get finished and let them decide. I have done my job, so I'll let them do theirs. If we get finished and the guy I'm keeping score for tells me he made a 4 and I know he made a 5, I will discuss it with him right there.. with the scoring officials right there. If I don't agree, I will not sign the card.

Those are professional and amateur tournaments. Charity tournaments are a different situation. I know there is a lot of cheating to be had. Those that cheat are the ones that only care about the money and prizes. If I know it happens, I will mention something, but in the end there is not a lot that can be done as there is only one team per hole and no one can really attest to the accusations. But if you are playing in a charity event, then you are out to have a good time and drink a few beers. So what if some ass hat wins $100 for first place.

This is not nec true... A best ball team of handicap 8s can have a good day and shoot 8-10 under if they combine well. When I was playing 8 I would have days that I would shoot low 70s and day that I would shoot high 80s.

The discusion here is actuly about someone cheating in a stroke play charity tournament. I was responding to soups post where he said even his kids know not to tatle. I was just asking when is it O.K. To report something.

I've never played with anyone that 'blatantly' cheated. Meaning, somone kicks out a ball when you're standing next to them or has done something so egregious in full view that its obvious. Guys go digging in the brush and always find their ball? Once or twice, ok. If it happens 6 or 7 times - pretty obvious something is up. But I'm not really paying attention to what ball others are playing and I'm not going to ask to see it so they can prove it.

EVERYONE YOU ARE WASTING YOUR BREATHE WITH SOUP! He obviously does not understand, even if he says he does, what everyone is referring to. We are not talking about skins games between playing partners or small "dopey" prizes. You can pretty much GUARANTEE one and/or two things about him: 1. He never finishes high enough in tourney's to be robbed by these cheaters and/or does not play in them (see quote) 2. He IS one of the cheater (dont think this is him, he obviously disagrees with cheating,just to cowardly to do anything that matters about it) I play in tourney that cost me 75-150 bucks at least monthly and if SOUP can really say that he would let someone take home 300-400 dollars or prizes that are worth that much that REALLY belongs to him, then he obviously has deeper issues.......or ALOT of money.

I see this discussion has gone downhill fast. So I will do my part to push this thing downhill faster.

I played in a team match play semi-finals last week for our club. Played against a team that won the last two team match plays by 5 & 4 and 6 & 5. Granted they could've had a string of good fortune. Their handicaps were supposedly 9 and 19. The guy with 9 handicap has played since 5 yrs old and played in a high school golf team. He is now early 40's. Right off the bat, I am suspicious of his handicap.

The SOB hits his approach shots no more than 5 or 6 feet from the pin every time my teammate or I got the approach shot close. He then makes every putt to win but misses every putt that doesn't count.

His team mate was no better, when the 9 (11 course handicap) handicapper was slightly off on a hole, the 19 (24 course handicap) handicapper puts it close with the approach shot.

My teammate and I ham & egg very well and kept up for most of the round, but the other team shot 72 and 81 to win 2 & 1. My teammate shot 85 (course handicap 16) and I shot 83 (course handicap 13)

Now I know why they won by such big margins in their match play.

Where did you get the idea that it's a "hacker's scramble"? The OP was referring to an individual stroke play tournament with a shotgun start. It may or may not have had a fairly large entry fee. If I'm participating in such a competition, I'm not going to sit passively by and let another player get away with cheating, even if I've confronted him about it. If he doesn't either withdraw or submit a correct scorecard, then I'm turning him in, as should any player in such a position who has even a thimbleful of honor.

This isn't a kindergarten tattle-tail issue, it's gaining a profit by illegitimate means, and in my book that is plain theft.
