+1 colin007 people can talk about it all they want, but the difference is most of us would just continue to blow up from there, but no matter how "un-professional" a shot may be these guys can bounce right back and thats why theyve got what we all dont haha.

does anyone else get the impression that when a pro hits a shank like johnson did today, the network almost seems to cover it up? they dont show replays of it like they do of good shots. im not saying they do this all the time, but its just the impression i get.

got that impression definitely. like i figured they'd have more to say about Snedeker putting himself out of next week, but they just sort of brushed past it.

Scariest thing I've seen in a while. I'm just getting to the point where I'm more confident over my bunker shots, and one of the game's wedge wizards hits a shank. Thanks dude.

At least when Sergio hit his (U.S. Open '08, I think?), I didn't see it.

His ability to come back, though, and play well after that is still something to take note of and try to emulate.

That's golf! Almost makes me feel good. I don't mean to say I enjoy it when someone else hits a bad shot. But when you see the pro's hit a shank, makes you except yours a little more. Feel bad for Snedeker though. Man, the wheels completely came off on that hole. He will kick himself tonight.

Yep. When someone holes a 40-foot putt, it gets shown multiple times.

Yet when Paddy shoots an 8 on a hole (lately, it's once every tournament), we hear about it, but never see any replays of it.

so why do you think that is? it doesnt seem to be favoritism...maybe theyre afraid of angering the player? but then again, its not the networks job to make the players happy...and i bet if tiger had shanked it they wouldve showed it from every angle with the super slo mo swing vision shot...

For heaven's sake, the networks will normally dwell on it, and give the announcers plenty of opportunities to take the really bad ones apart. The announcers continued to comment on it for the next few holes. Things were happening so quickly in the "race" for the top 30 that there weren't a lot of shots replayed that would normally be replayed. I actually enjoyed seeing a few more shots for a change and not endless replays. No basis for crying "conspiracy" on that one.

The image you get of tour pros on tv is kinda messed up.

There are always pros in the tournaments that hit shanks, chunks, blade shots etc...

Of course they don't show that on tv so that the player can save face. They usually only show good shots so the viewers automatically think every tour pro hits it to 2 feet from 150 yards or holing 20 foot putts are routine for the pros.

I'm not saying that the pros aren't good, they are exceptionally good, but they are still human and hit a lot of bad shots. However their bad shots are still good shots compared to your average amateur.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

why do networks care about players saving face? whats their agenda?

They did show a replay of that shot. They don't go overboard on a bad shot out of respect would be my thought. We've all hit bad ones and nobody want's to see it replayed a 100 times. That will happen later on the "Top 10" show!!

I watch to see good shots anyway not bad ones. I see plenty of them when I play.

Last week's tournamnet Mike Weir had a 70 yard shot to the green on 18. Hazard in front of the green, he chunked his first shot right into it. Then chunked his second into it again, both of which were shown on TV.

I was suprised they showed them.

    • All great info. Thanks for the reply.
    • Yea, it's more complicated than your high school projectile motion equations.  I am thinking it could increase under certain conditions. A gust of wind blowing in the same direction as the spin, causing more high and low pressure on the ball in a certain way that it increases the spin?  It has zero vertical velocity at its apex. So, it is all velocity caused by gravity for the vertical component.  Yea, landing angle is a big thing.  It is parabolic. Your apex is 90 yards in the air. A 30-yard elevated green is 1/3rd that height. At the apex, your vertical descent angle is zero, it should be horizontal. So, you are going from zero theta to let's say 45 degrees. Even if it was linear, let's say you're landing angle is close to 30 degrees. That is less than a driver and probably is significant.  Yea, it depends on how you hit it. Especially for downhill shots. If you hit a flighted shot, it might react more like a normal shot because of the lower launch and lower apex relative to your position. Versus a normal shot might come in at like 70 degrees, instead of 45 degrees.

    • Spin will decay slightly over time, but not by a lot. The horizontal portion of the velocity will also decay due to air resistance. The vertical component will be increasing since the ball is accelerating due to gravity (albeit that the spin is creating lift, which will counteract that some). Neither of those has much of an impact of how the ball will react. The biggest difference is the vertical land angle. The angle theta prime (not sure how to show that on here) will be shallower than theta. That means the ball will stop faster at theta than at theta prime. The other thing is because there is still a horizontal component to the velocity, it will carry less far at theta prime than at theta.  The effects of those two things work in opposite directions. Which one "wins" will depend on ground conditions, ball flight, spin, any necessary carry distances, etc. Fortunately the margins are fairly small so you can wing it with enough experience. The calculation of the carry distance change is what your range finder estimates when you have slope turned on.
    • So, I was looking at this image and wondered what the best way is to play your approach to an elevated green versus a lowered green. Is the spin and velocity profile at θ' much different than at θ? I don't know the physics of it but to my wee brain, it would seem that at θ' the spin would be higher but velocity lower. At θ the spin would seem to be lower but velocity higher since it has more time to fall from its peak where it would be zero. Even the image below is off visually since we know the arc of the ball flight isn't consistent throughout.    It's okay if you tell me I'm overthinking this. 😂
