Pros and Cons of Square and Round Fairway Woods

As the title says, I just want to know the pros and cons of Square and Round fairway woods. I need to get a different 3 wood because I just cannot hit mine of the deck. I have been looking at the Nike Sumo/Dymo fairway woods but, don't know if I should go with a square or round head. Looking forward to some responses.

Try the Nickent series of fairway woods. If you can't hit those it is time to see a teaching pro.

Another recommendation would the the Bobby Jones by Jesse Ortiz woods. Again, this woods have a low and deep center of gravity and low profile face to give you the confidence you need on a tight lie from the fairway.

It would also help us to know what kind of fairway you are playing now.

As for square vs round. I like a traditional style clubhead so square is not for me.

Squares will tend to be easier to hit in the fairway, but wont be as hot in the rough as the square clubface could get snagged. Squares are less workable, meaning they hit straighter, but you can't curve them as much when you want to.

I am playing the same 3 wood that is in my signature. But it is a Sonartec GS Tour 14*. I bought it with a Fujikura Speeder Pro stiff shaft. I like my 3 wood off the tee but hate it off the deck.

Honestly I never hit woods off the deck. Its too inconsistent for me and I can hit the 3h 210-220yds. If I cant reach a par5 in 2 from that far out then I really don't need to be there. Grab a nike SQ 20* 3h and you will be amazed by how easy it is to hit far and how useless the 3 and 5 woods seem from the fairway.

Just my 2 cents and I am a high handicapper so keep that in mind, but I prefer the consistency of the hybrid to the possible extra 20 yds from a 3 or 5 wood with the great possibility of having to dig the next shot out of the woods. My golf partner makes fun of me because every shot he'll say, "going with the hybrid again?" even if its 40 yds from the green. Ha its funny but I use them more than any other club (putter aside) and there is a reason why.

Pro of squared is that it is suppose to have higher MOI and be more forgiving on mishits.
Con is how they look.

Look at the Sumo2 if you want a cheaper squared FWY wood.

i very seldom use my 3 wood off the deck, prefer my 3 hybrid, can hit it 200+ consistently and usually pretty straight, sometimes farther than my drive on a long par 4 or par 5. I have trouble hitting my 3 wood off the deck, usually dont make good contact. When i do, I can hit it pretty far, but thats maybe 2 out of 10 times, ill hit the 3 hybrid good probably 7-8 of 10 times. The 3 wood is good on tee shots on short par 4's and thats pretty much all i use it for.

My previous 3 wood was the Nike Sumo 2 (square head). I didn't do so well from the deck with it.

It was great for me off the tee, though. It was like having a back up driver.

I kept hearing about another fairway wood from the guys at the club.....many of them had 'em in their bag. I saw the sticks go on sale everywhere for $125 or so....I caved in and tried one. It works exceptionally well off the deck.

It is the Taylor Made Burner 3 wood. The head design really hugs the ground and launches the ball nicely from the deck. It is one of the easier clubs to hit in my bag....and that's saying something.

I also have trouble hitting my 3w off the deck so I ended buying an Adams Boxer 3 Fairway Hybrid. I just got it in the mail saturday so I havent had a chance to hit it yet but its supposed to have the distance of a 3w but be easier to hit like a hybrid. I got it brand new off of ebay for $41 shipped so if I dont like it Im not out a lot of money. Hopefully I can hit it pretty well because I cant hit my 3w off of the deck to save my life.

try a 4w instead
many companies still make it and its the "happy medium"
i owned a 3w once..hated it

i needed more than a 5w offered
the Mizuno F-50 i hit now is a great club and cheap!
you can pick it up n ebay for like $40

i RARELY miss this club off the deck
i almost never hit it off the tee, if i need it off a tight par 4 or long par 3, shes on the ground

I have thought about a 4 Wood before. How much could i find a Sumo2 for? I found a TaylorMade Burner 3 Wood for $50 at Golf Galaxy. I didn't actually see it but a friend of mine is going to look at it tomorrow.

I bought a Nike Sumo2 squared 4-wood last year as part of a Golfsmith deal (2 clubs for $200, a Nike driver and a fairway wood).

The only problem with the Nike Sumo2 4-wood is that the face is slightly offset (towards closed). I wasn't aware of that when I bought it, as I don't prefer to hit an offset club, despite my swing faults. Also, the Nike stock shafts were a little stiff for my average swing-speed.

Once I figured out how to deal with the slight offset I hit the club fairly well, even off the deck. But I prefer my Cobra 3 wood to the Nike Sumo2 4 wood.

OP, due to your lower handicap, if you want a square headed-wood I would look to another vendor besides Nike, unless the Dymo version of the wood allows you to adjust the club-face angle (like with the driver).

Dymo2 is such a great club!! I have both the driver and 3-wood...both inspire a lot of confidence and hit really straight!

The square head is forgiving, higher MOI - so straighter shots. The regular one is better for working the ball etc...I think you get more distance out of the regular one too.

I personally don't hit the 3-wood off the deck...I tend to go with the hybrid instead. Safer, more consistent shots. My hybrid is square too...my play style is as safe and straight as possible. I'd rather land on the fairway and sacrifice the few lost yards.

Consider a 4-wood too...that may be the ideal club for tee/fairway shots...

Either way my advice is to demo the Dymo and Dymo2 in both 3 and 4 wood

I wish the golf galaxy near me was closer. It is 45 minutes away and that is the only place that i know of around that I can hit any clubs I want. I am excited to try the dymo along with other woods.
