The night couldn't get much better. I've shaved, showered, kids are in bed, and wife is out with the girls having a wine, and I'm sitting on the couch, a nice, neat Lagavulin 16 in the glass, Blood Simple DVD just started up...nice and quite around here. Love it.

DN, do you drink anything other than Lagavulin? Not knocking it, it's good stuff, just wandered if you ever went astray to say a JW blue?

I've not tried JW Blue. I've only tried Lagavulin and Macallan, as far as single malts are concerned. I'm going to get a bottle of Laphroaig next. I've heard its really good.

But I am somewhat partial to Lagavulin. What will a bottle of JW Blue set me back? JW Black is the highest level under that label, correct?

Last I heard a bottle of blue would probably be in the $190 - $200 range for 750ml. I've been fortunate enough that the last (2) bottles that I received were gifts. I only drink it when I'm feeling "sporty" or special occasions. My usual fare is Glenlivet 18. Try the Glenlivet 21 as well, great mellow smokiness with a ending flavor that sneaks up on you (man that's good). I actually prefer it over the 25yr.which seems a bit more spicey.

Glenlivet prices range 12yr-$45 15yr.-$75 18yr.-$100 21yr.-$160 and 25yr(or XXV) is around $300. There are many good single malts out there, so if you get a chance, try them all; I do. (MMMM-MMM good!)

For my scotch drinking friends, a little write-up that I found very interesting. I may try some of these other brands of scotch.

As stated above, so far, the only "good" scotch I've tried is The Lagavulin and The Macallan. This author really bends over backwards giving props to The Laphroaig. That will be my next bottle, a 15 year Laphroaig. Happy reading: http://www.charm.net/~kmarsh/scotch.html Oh, note the bottom where it says: Rating: from 1 to 10, 10 being best, 7 and up "good stuff", 4 to 6 good for mixed drinks, 0 to 3 for in-laws, unwanted guests and disinfection. A huge LOL over "in-laws, unwanted guests, and disinfection."

JW Blue Label is great. Then it goes JW Gold, JW Green, JW Black.

Tonight I'm drinking some caipirinhas that I've made. Lime wedges + sugar (muddled together)+ ice + cachaça (sugar cane alcohol).

We talked about gimlets earlier in this post, a caipirinha is the ultimate gimlet... the national drink of Brazil.

I was thinking of this thread a few minutes ago. I was looking through old Golf Digests (I think I was looking at an issue from late 2006) and saw an ad for Gentleman Jack. I've seen that drink many times, and even drank it a few times, but this ad in particular had it served in two martini glasses, one of which had a cherry in it. Any idea what this was?

It's been 20 yrs. but I remember such a drink served as you describe called a "Whiskey Martini". I don't recall the brand used or if Vermouth was used as in a regilar martini, though i have seen them.

Probably a Manhattan. Bourbon (or other American style whiskey), vermouth (usually sweet or sweet+dry), and Angostura bitters. Can be very good when made properly, sickly sweet when incorrect.

Tonight I'm having hot cocoa. No alcohol (except the rum in the 1/8 tsp of homemade vanilla extract...) but very good. It's the "Italian hot cocoa" in the Joy of Cooking---very thick and rich. Almost makes me wish I was somewhere with worse weather this week.....

You are correct. Manhattan is the correct term. As previously stated I wasn't sure on the vermouth but that was abouit it. Been a lone time for me, please excuse the brain - she ain't what she used to be.

Currently sipping Congac, trying to dr. a cold. And watching reruns on Golf Channel

a little something i discovered in b.a. argentina about two years back, its got two ingredients: fernet and coke, with a dash of lime juice if you like. man is it good. fernet is of czech origin i believe. it's a bitter aperitif with lots of tannin. it tastes pretty bad by itself, but with coke it's a tasty treat.

I've been drinking Bloody Mary this weekend, in addition to my regular Vodka-Seltzer w/ lime. My Bloody Mary recipe is: vodka, tomato juice, horseradish, habanero sauce, black pepper, fresh lime, olives, worcestershire. Next time I will opt for low-sodium ingredients as the saltiness was pretty intense.

    • No, not that Minnie Driver. This one: It's a mini driver from Titleist, available for Tour validation/testing starting this week at Kapalua. It's available in righty and lefty and is only in 13° models for now. GT280 is a direct result of Titleist’s collaboration with PGA TOUR players on the development and testing of the TSR 2W prototype, which debuted on TOUR at last year’s PLAYERS Championship. With many players seeking an additional option at the top end of their setup, Titleist tour reps and R&D engineers worked with players such as Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris to dial in a 13-degree head that worked as a go-to club off the tee and off the deck. Now on Tour: New Titleist GT280 The arrival of the 2025 PGA TOUR season this week in Maui brings with it an addition to Titleist’s breakthrough line of GT metalwoods: the new Titleist GT280.
