I recentlu upgraded to Taylormade r7's, and I really like their feel, but the shafts are a little too big, so I'm constantly choking down and feeling uncomfortable. Is there a way I could get them fitted perhaps? How much do you think that would cost for 5-PW? It's a bit ironic because I spent a good bit on 55g Graphite shafts which end up being too big. Is it possible to cut them down to size and just regrip them? That's just an off-topic question. Thanks!

2 ways to go...

get them cut down and change the swing weight. the cheaper way to go.

get fitted and put new shafts in. more expensive but you keep the swingweight close to factory.

good shafts that dont break the bank:
FST Pro 115 - about 9$ each
True temper, S300 - about 14$ each

more expensive shafts:
Royal Precision Project X - 30$ each
FST KBS Tour - 30$ each

You say they are too long, but did a fitter tell you that? Because many times the solution might be a flatter lie rather that a shorter shaft. If that is the case, you just get them bent, no muss, no fuss (and less expensive). Only a fitter can determine that.

It would be a mistake to just cut down the shaft.

Only problem is r7's are cast and when you bend cast irons you run a very high risk of them breaking. Forged clubs are easily bent, which is why almost all wedges can be bent no problem. I have the r7's and I don't think the lie is too flat at all, especially since I stand way closer to the ball than most, sort of like furyk lol.

If you are choking down you are already playing at the lower swingweight, so I would ignore that unless the clubs feel too "light" when you choke down. Yes, you can get them cut down and regripped, probably less than $10 per club plus the cost of the grip. I would have one club done first, see if you like it. If not they can add the length back with a shaft extension, which is also maybe a $10 operation.

i know golf galaxy does it for like 2-3 dollars per club. plus the cost of new grips. but they also have this process in which they can save the grip and take it off without damaging it, then put it back on. idono how much more that cost. but id check it out

I recently bought the r7 irons in steel shafts. I really liked them when i test drove them at teh outdoor range, but on the course after 10 or so rounds i think the steel shafts are way to light. I am considering re-shafting them also.

Well if I trimmed the shafts, and replaced the grips, did a great job, wouldn't that only decrease the swing weight? Just thinking physics here. And also, if it actually does, that's ANOTHER plus, because I would like to swing them faster, yeah.

    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
