Huh? I don't this.... you have never hit a 6I? You've never misshit a club and left yourself one club farther away than a 7I? It just seems hard to comprehend. Do you never play a punch when it's windy... like a 3/4 punch 6I instead of a 7I into a stiff breeze? Or do you just play a par 3 course with a lot of short holes?

I am not consistent with anything longer than a 7i so that's what I use, even off the tee. With nothing longer than a 7i I have proven to myself that I can score an 82 at my 6200 yard home course on multiple occasions. By scoring par on all of the 3's and 5's and laying up on the 4's for bogey. Do the math it's a 10 handicap. Bag is much lighter too.

So you'd go with 7i, 7i on par 4s, 7i,7i,7i on par 5s and 7i on par 3s? This reeks of an acronym (OCD or TBS), but you must have one helluva short game to score an 82.

If that works for you, great, but I couldn't play that way. I can't say that I'm totally consistent with any club in my bag except my putter, but I never stop trying to improve. I could probably do the same as you, but I wouldn't enjoy it much. With my 7I I could only reach one of our par 5's in 3, and that one would take 3 perfect shots (the course is 6500 yards from the middle tees, and sometimes I like to play the blues just for kicks). It's extremely doubtful that I could break 90 very often that way. But mostly it wouldn't be much fun for me. I'd certainly never have shot the 76 that I did a couple of months ago, or the other half dozen sub 80 rounds this year. I like standing over birdie putts.

When I lighten my bag, I take out about 6 or 7 clubs, but I still keep something like 4W, 5H, 8I, PW, and 56° SW. I may also keep the 6I, and of course, the putter. That lightens up the bag and still gives me a full range of clubs. Different strokes, etc.

according to this post, how many people would be willing to play closest to the pin from 175 yards using only a 6 iron for a 150.00 dollar buy in ?

I can stretch out my usual 6-iron (Ben Hogan Apex Edge, stock stiff shaft) to about 170 yards, but an experience in a simulator last night perplexed me. I picked up a Wilson Staff Di7 6-iron (uniflex) from the demo rack, and the first swing I made (fluid, but not very hard) was gauged to send the ball 190 yards. The simulator read it out to 205 once I loosened up. I don't believe those numbers for a second, but it makes me wonder what it would say if I hit my usual club in one of those stations.

I can fly my 6-iron (Mizuno MP-30, TT S300 shaft) about 180. Maybe 185 if I crush it. (My first post!)

That's impressive - with my Mizuno MP11s I can only fly the 6-iron about 80 yards. Maybe I should stop throwing it underhand?

I hit it about 170 on just a normal, smooth solid swing. Can stretch it to about 178 if necessary, but normally wouldn't. Would probably choke down a 5 iron instead. Dynamic Gold S300 shafts.
