First of all, I'd like to know what is your average SW yardage on a full swing shot.
Second, is there a huge difference between a blade style SW (like Vokeys or Mizuno MP wedges) and a cavity back SW, in terms of forgivness and yardage??

I used to game a very old cavity SW called FOXBAT and I loved it. It was my most confident and preferred shot in 100 yards and under. Now with my new Adams Tom Watson wedge, which is a blade style, I seem to be having hard time hitting it the same distance I used to hit the FOXBAT. It's much better in chipping, pitching and bunker shots, but in full shots I don't know why I am not liking the feeling, I find it a little bit tougher to control and even on flushed shots I am not going as far as I used to be.

Whats the problem here??

Well I hit my SW 100 yards if a close the clubface slightly.

70 yards if I leave it slightly open. 50 yards if I flop it. My friend has a old sam snead SW blade style. He hits is considerably shorter than me (20 yards shorter). He hits his other irons further than mine though. Yeah the SW he's got is great for all those things you said but he doesn't like full shots.

60 degree LW 95 yards carry on a full shot
56 degree SW 110 yards carry on a full shot
50 degree GW 125 yards carry on a full shot

As far as blades vs cavity back, blades tend to have a smaller club face, thus maybe not as forgiving. Cavity backs tend to have a lower center of gravity, so probably hit the ball a little higher, thus maybe not quite as far.

The happy medium here is a forged, forgiving club. I have a forged 56 degree MacGregor EZ out and love it. It has a good combination of feel and forgiveness.

I hit my 56* Vokey 105yds if I bust it. Rest of short irons are 52* Vokey 125, 45* PW 145, 9iron 155. The SW seems very short and leaves a tricky little yardage gap for me.

Wedges are about control and accuracy, not how far you can hit it if you swing out of your shoes. I guess some people are impressed by a 110 yard sandwedge, but I will settle for hitting mine 80 - 85 yards, and knowing it will be 5 - 10 feet from the pin.

Evidently I must fall into the "shortknocker" group...judging by the distances the others are showing.

75-85 yards. Accuracy > Distance everyday. If I try to murder it I can get maybe 100, but thats the reason there is another club with a lower loft to swing =]

I don't use a sandwedge my gap wedge is what you would call a more forgiving wedge (Mizuno MX see sig). It doesn't have a cavity, just a bit more muscle low down. Still all the same versatility, but more distance than a wedge of Vokey dimensions. I would buy the lob wedge of the MX series wedge if it came in a 58* loft. . . .

I carry my 56* SW 195 yards

Anyways, its an 80 yard club for me all day, I have a gap between my 56 and 52, so if I have 90 to the hole I will wail on a SW but I really dont like doing that....

You may be trying to help the ball in the air, thus not hitting down on it, which may have been masked by your other irons, but now with the blade, you gotta hit down on it consistently....

wow I hope that made sense, I dont feel like proofreading tonight.

First of all, I'd like to know what is your average SW yardage on a full swing shot.

I very rarely hit a "full" sandwedge. If I'm in that 110-115 range, I will go up a few wraps on a 52* to lessen up the spin and bring it in a little lower. I feel it's a much more controlled shot then getting on a sandwedge. As far as distances go, I would say the reason you're not getting the distance is because you don't have the perimeter weighting of the cavity back behind the ball. On the flip side, you have much more control around the greens. :)

Hey Billy, why not get the lob wedge and just have it bent 2* strong?

My 56SW goes ~90yds with a good 3/4 swing. I get ~105yds with my 52GW. I can hit both further, but I lose a lot of accuracy. Both my wedges are Cleveland TA 900's.

This is my first post...WOOHOO!!

my sandwedge is 54...i hit it about 80 pretty consistently with nice loft and it stopping pretty much where it lands...one two small bounces max...shorter say 60 yards i use my 58 wedge and around 100 i used my approach wedge...pitch wedge around 110-120. Now that i am getting the distances they are becoming pretty automatic...inside 60 i take a less swing with my 58 pending how far out i am and up to lob/close chip shots....my wedges are cleveland CG14s...really starting to like them

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
