When playing a bump and run type chip with a 6-iron, where do you grip the club, same as a full-swing shot or do you choke down?

If you choke down, how far down?

Thanks.

I used a 7 Monday and did not choke down far enough. I think I will try an 8 next time, (says the strong lofted Burner player).

I use an 8i around the greens and don't choke down. Feet together, ball across from back foot, hands over front foot.

Then again I'm awful, so.

I rarely do this, as I generally just bump and run with my pitching wedge. I just feel more comfortable with it. But I received advice once from a near scratch player who strongly advocated clubbing up for bump and run shots. He hit from 6i-9i, depending on the shot, and choked up a good bit. Not quite down to the bottom of the grip, but closer to there than to the end of the club.

I generally use a 9 iron, and choke half way down the grip. I keep the wrists fairly still and try to only use my arms

I use whatever club I feel I need to use, depending how far off the green I am, and how much room I have to roll the ball.

Higher loft - more air time, less ground time (as a percentage)
Lower loft - less air time, more ground time (as a percentage)

So I generally practice chipping with SW, 9, 7, and 3. When I add a hybrid to my bag to replace my 3 and 4 irons, I will be practicing with my hybrid rather than the 3. I generally do not choke down except with the long iron, I usually grab the bottom of the grip.

When using a longer iron for chip and run, you should choke down on the club so that your swing looks like a putting stroke--meaning it should be almost straight back and straight through.

I use upto 7-iron for chipping depending on the distance to the hole. All my chipping stroke is similar to a putting stroke. Choke down enough so that the club is almost vertical. Straight back and straight through.

I will use most any club for a bump and run all depending on the lie and distance. I almost always choke up all the way down to where the grip meets the shaft.

For chipping with a 6-iron, Id grip down all the way to the bottom of the grip. I often chip with my 7-iron and I grip down all the way and use a putting stroke. It works well and Ive chipped-in many times this way.

When I'm chipping with an iron, I set up, grip and swing exactly as I would do with a putter.

I let my arms hang naturally and grip the club so that when the swing bottoms out it just brushes the turf. Of course, different irons will require you to grip down varying degrees to achieve the desired result.

I find that's the most foolproof way of executing a chip and run shot.

In his classic book, Tom Watson advises choking down more on the longer clubs so that all your chipping clubs seem to be about the same length.

I use an 8-iron for these shots. I grip down to the point that the index finger on my right hand is only about an inch from the bottom of the grip. I'm pretty short though, if my clubs were fitted I don't doubt that it wouldn't be this far.

I dont change my grip though. Same as anything but a putt; but, as was said, feet together and ball back.

I never choke down, however I also rarely use a 6 iron. If I need less loft I use a 7 and lead further with my hands. Good luck.

What I chip with depends on the grass and the lie. I'll use everthing from a 3-wood to a sand wedge depending on the desired landing spot and roll. I typically use a putter grip and an elongated putting stroke - consistent and in control. I'm more likely to drain a 20 yard bump and run than a 60 foot putt any day.

I choke down to about two inches from the end of the grip.

6-iron chip useful when you have a fairly long chip, especially one going up hill - less chance you'll leave it short. Also, if the ground is rather hard, you lessen chance of funny bounces you could get from a more lofted club.

It's one you have to practice. Not a whole lot, but try it a few times before it counts.

when you get up above an 8 iron chip your gonna get a fair amount or roll. the general rule of thumb i use is to use whatever loft you need to get to the front of the green and let it release (if i need a considerable amount or run i'll usually go to the air and put it where i want). but to answer the op's question...do whatever feels right...if on a particular shot you want a bit more feel choke down...the problem i sometimes have with long iron chips is if teh club length is too long i get a little too round on the swing instead of a nice back and forth motion causing me to push my chips out right....

If I have a long chip with lots of green I use a 7 iron.
I choke down to the bottom of the grip and do a normal chipping stroke.
I get it nice and close.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.Β
