Putting
focus on straight putts
focus on distance control
eliminate three putts
have more one putts

Chipping
focus on solid contact
focus on distance control
focus on direction

keep your up and down stats during a round. this is anytime you successfully one putt from off the green.

putting and chipping go hand in hand to lower your score and keep it consistently low. A benefit of working on your chipping and pitching is working on your hitting zone. this will help your overall golf swing.

Definately putting and chipping. I hit like, 6 GIRS in a round. I shoot 6 or 7 over most of the time. Chipping is a LOT of fun to practise by the way, you'll fall in love with hitting flop shots etc. And your putting could use some work.

The best advise I can give you is, read some of Bob Rotella's books and work on the part of your game that YOU think you should work on. And if it's not putting, still practise it haha.

Course management and hitting greens. 43% of the holes you play result in a double or worse, which indicates you try to hit the "hero" shot if you find yourself in trouble. Resolve yourself to the fact that you are going to make a bogey, and play smart, don't let holes get away from you, and roll up your score. Also, with only 20 GIR, you put a lot of pressure on your short game. If you can't get your GIR % up, sharpen up your short game to improve your chances of getting up & down. Pay attention to where you are missing greens, short, right, left, etc., to see if it's a course management issue (short), or a swing issue. Good Luck.

Improving your chipping and putting will definitely help you out assuming that you continue to miss that many greens.

Looks like the easiest way for you to lower your scores is simply to hit more greens. Give yourself some putts at birdie and par rather than always needing a great wedge to get up and down for par or bogey (or worse).

Three putts almost 1 out of 4 times. That should be addressed.

every single aspect. when you go to the range get a jumbo. save 20 for wedges, 20 for your driver and use the rest with your irons. the go put for an hour if they have a putting area. then put at your house.

also getting lessons might help

Lessons will make the biggest difference imho. I went from shooting mid 90's to mid 80's in 6months after 3 lessons (and lots of range time). You lose the most strokes with short game improvement but you must have the fundamentals of the full swing to play decent golf.

Yes I know my short game needs a lot of improvement. Putting mat is on the way and I will be spending tons of spare time practicing putting.

Got some weird math going on here....

did you throw out 18 holes? You are basing your stats on 189 holes but you actually played 207.

Also, your fairways hit is 18/47.... where does this come from?

Im not trying to be a jerk, just making sure you're not misleading yourself in any way.

Like most, I would suggest working on putting/chipping first. However, I would also put more emphasis on tee shots. This game is much easier playing from the short grass.... which will in turn help with your GIR as well.

Just noticing your puts per hole and putts per GIR are not much different... focus on short game...... chipping and pitching. You seem to be losing a lot of strokes because you don't save much in your short game. You should have a higher percentage of one putts to balance the low GIR, and I don't see that in your stats. I know because this is where my game is. Thursday I played like a total hack on the front 9, yet I still salvaged a handful of strokes with 5 one putt greens (and 4 2 putts for a total of 13 putts on the side). It was due to good chipping and being confident over those 3 to 6 foot putts, not because I was hitting close with my approach shots. If you get to the point of 5 one putts per round, there is already a 5 stroke gain on your handicap.

Not that there aren't other areas where you can improve, but I think that your biggest gains can be made by improving your wedge game.

If you only play 10 rounds a season, I'm guessing playing and practicing time is limited. Do you have access to a par-3 course? It's a fun way to work on all your iron, short game skills. For the cost of a bucket of balls, you can get some real-game practice that will improve your hcp alot more IMO.

    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
    • I saw this comment made in a golf article... "Most golfers stand over a 4- or 5-iron still negotiating with themselves. They think about how hard to swing, whether they have the right club, if they have the aim correct and more. It’s a lot to deal with and long irons punish the “half-in” golf swing." I am not sure the "most golfers" is correct regarding the bolded part. I can understand if there is a bunker, water, and/or OB that a lot of golfers would be fixated on that. I am not sure that leads to ending up more times there. Pending your level in golf, the variance is so large in outcomes, it could be just with in the expected outcomes. I can understand if have a big lake on the right side of the hole being one of the most terrifying shots for right-handed amateur golfers.  I am not sure many golfers are standing over the ball talking to themselves, "Ok, maybe I should step back and pull the 4-iron. Am I lined up right? Oh, the wind came up, should I swing harder? What am I going to have for dinner tonight, maybe steak. (Joking, somewhat 😛)" A question is that how much chatter do you get while standing over the ball. Are you questioning the everything about your golf shot?
