Looking for a new laptop after my old Acer recently ran out of hard drive space (60 GB) and i am looking for a new one. I found a new Sony at Best Buy for $700 and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

If you are looking at the ones that come with Windows 7 64bit premium, you might have an issue finding drivers for your current peripherals. You may find that your existing printer and other devices will not work real well. Other than that, it looks good too me. personally, I like going to the manufacturers website and "rolling my own". This way you get exactly want you want, and just not whats on the shelf.

I've not personally owned or used a VAIO, but historically they've been hit-or-miss in terms of reliability from what I've heard (on teh Intert00bs and from friends who've had them). Don't know about the current lots, though.

I'd generally suggest thinking about what you want to do with it and turning that into a list of requirements. Then shop the big guys (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) and see who has the best option. Also think about whether you want a big screen (nice if you mostly sit at home or at a desk) or a small one (better for traveling).

Finally, if it's just a matter of HD space, you can always just upgrade the HD. You can get a 320 GB disk for about a hundred bucks (give or take a bit) and it'd be fairly straightforward to do the switch yourself.

I love my Sony Vaio. Its the best computer Ive ever owned. Its fast, the screen is big and clear. Its just a great laptop.

I have two Sony laptops, would definitely recommend them, they are good systems.

But would not recommend you get the Best Buy warranty. Before you purchase it, I would recommend that you see if there is a "Sony Style" store near you, if so, you can get the Sony warranty which covers everything, even if you drop it or spill liquid on it, you could also see if they have any laptops for around the same price. Usually they are pretty comparable to Best Buy, and you may also get the warranty over the phone, but not sure.

Does your existing laptop have any issues besides being out of hard drive space? Backing up old files onto an external HD is much cheaper. Or are you actively using most of that space?

Thanks for the input guys. I am still leaning towards geting it but my car broke down yesterday and it's an $800 repair bill so I may have to put the laptop on hold. Btw thereason I was looking to get a new one was that my current one not only has a tiny(and full) HDD, it also only has 1/2 GB of RAM and it's maxed out so I can't add more. Ive basically hit the limit of it's use because I'm going to need a new one when I go to college next fall. Maybe I can get my parents to buy it for me... It's for school, right? Hahaha

I was looking at that same laptop... but decided to go with the HP dv7-3065, it has the same stats except bigger hard drive (500gb), an AMD processor (2.4ghz), and a bigger screen (17"). It costs 30 bucks more, but i LOVE it and think it was well worth getting over the vaio.

The HP is the only other laptop that I am looking at but I really like the Blue Ray drive on the Sony because I don't have an HD tv at home and I am going to college in the fall so it would be nice to watch high-def movies. Also i've had bad experiences with AMD processers in the past.

The HP does have the blu-ray drive... thats why I bought it, only 30 bucks more for a bigger screen and more HD space. AMD and Intel both have their problems with processors, I have owned plenty of computers with each and have never had AMD problems moreso than I do with Intel.
