Hi All,
I've decided that at age 62 I'm going to give up the idea of the PGA calling me but I've figured out how to tell if I'm hitting the ball well off the tee. If it feels good and I can't see it anymore after it passes the 150 marker I must have done well. Of course the down side of this is always having to hunt for my ball. Old age sucks.
Where'd my ball go?

Duffy,

Striving every day to be the person my dogs think I am.

You know you are driving the ball well when the ball is already gone before it even felt like you swung.

I feel like I'm driving well when my preshot routine involves deciding which side of the fairway I want to be on. If I don't know where my ball went, that just means I hit it hard .

Most people know by feel if they are striking it well. When the ball ends up in the fairway or close to it, and you hit it far enough to have a shot at the green, then you did fine. For high level golfers, having complete control over where the ball is going is what it is all about to be driving really well.

I wish I did, but several of my mishits feel the same as a well-struck ball.

when you are able to find it and it has landed in the fairway it was a good drive.....assuming it went a lil farther than 50 ft. just remember 200yards in the fairway is better than 250 in the woods

Driving well is easy to define: You walk (or drive) down to where you hope it will be and find a ball with your mark on it in the short grass, and from there you can hit a normal club without heroics to the green in regulation.

Driving even better is when you go to where you think your ball is... and it is not there. No, it is the ball fifty yards further down in the middle the fairway with your mark on it, and your playing partners are looking for the sprinkler head it must have landed on, while complaining loudly.

I drive well if I land where I'm aiming and the ball flies at least 220 yards.

I can tell immediately if it's going to slice right into the trees. Man I hate that feeling.

Yeah. The clue for me is watching the ball slice through the trees.

I guess I shouldn't speak for the majority. I have a strong grip and my misses happen when I get too "wristy" with the driver. So, I know right away based on my wrist action when I hook it. I do have much more feel and feedback on my ball striking with my forged irons though.

I have noticed that when I make good contact with any club be it a driver or wedge, the actual contact with the ball during the swing is barely noticeable and usually coincides with a sweet little "click" sound for irons, a ringing "ping" sound from the hybrids and fairway wood, and a nice "POP" from the driver.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
