i have a subscription for Golf Digest but its not the greatest. a lot of contradictory tips, too many reviews of resorts/private courses that average joes like me will never be able to play.

I think I like GOLF a little better, but I subscribe to both...

I am also getting Golf World free right now... and it is pretty interesting... less BS and tips, more "people" coverage.

I could really care less about the tips... I like the stories, interviews, equipment, and otherwise.

a lot of contradictory tips

Your gonna find contradictory tips in every magazine.

too many reviews of resorts/private courses that average joes like me will never be able to play.

And most of the travel stuff is restaurants and cars, not golf. I usually just skip that section.

The problem is there really rent many options. Well, not many good options. Golf Magazine is fine, but you can find all of their stuff online or in Sports Illustrated. Plus, they have all of the same problems as Golf Digest. There are a lot of smaller magazines, but they usually have no-name instructors and shaky club reviews.

i would love to see some concrete data on some of the clubs/balls. usually all it is is the very subjective testers opinions. are there any mags out there that take equipment and put it on an iron byron or something like that to show whats the best?

You mean a golf version of Consumer Reports. That would be interesting, I wonder if they would consider doing an annual golf issue. Not sure if they dont test golf equipment already. Anyone?

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I subscribe to both Golf and Golf Digest. I think they're both pretty worthless and filled with way too many ads. Then again.. every magazine now days is that way.

I agree with Big M, Golf World is good for profiles, tournament coverage, equipment, etc... No instruction articles... Plus it's a (mostly) weekly publication.

I subscribe to both Golf Digest and Golf. Feel the same as many other posters. I like the coverage of tours and interviews etc, but don't really pay much attention to the tips section. I look at all the tips, but unless something catches my eye I read it and it is gone. I was reading Tiger's tips in January's golf digest near the front and he saying he feels this and that, and I am thinking ya this is useless to most people who golf.

I would like to get Golf World, but I live in Canada; I can subscribe to it, but I fear that by the time it got delivered, it may be a week late. Not much good when it is a weekly magazine.

I just cancelled Golf Digest early Dec, 2009, and asked if my remaining $$$$ can be put on a sub to Golf World. (Their sister publication) I haven't seen an issue yet...any day I guess. If that turns out to be a dud..I gonna try Golf Week.
Based on what I read on this thread, World seems to be what I'm after.
THP mentioned in this thread seems interesting....

They are all dreadful. Essentially just trashy "womens' " mags" for golfers.

Cover stories:
"Hit my hero shots -Tiger" = Get Your Bikini Body Back in 10 Days
"Stripe it Like Ernie" = Get that Promotion You've Always Wanted the Easy Way.
"Phil shares his Short game Secrets" = Celebrities Share Their Make up Secrets.
"Nail Those Irons LIke Faldo" = Younger Looking Skin in 7 Days

Not to mention all the advertising with ridicilous claims about balls and clubs making you a bomber with pinpoint accuracy.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I've had a Golf Digest subscription for awhile and just renewed it. It's cheap and something to read.

I liked Golf Digest the best in the distant past, but no longer. I subscribe to both Golf and Golf Digest, but may drop GD. Golf Magazine has moved ahead of Golf Digest in my opinion. The GD editors seem to cater to a broader scope than information about the game of golf and how to play it -- which is why I read golf magazines. Admittedly, I also like to be up-to-date on equipment but I don't trust the magazines' reviews all that much.

I get Golf Digest for free. It seems like there is always something I purchase that has a coupon for a free annual subscription. I like it for the most part, some good articles, some trash as well.

Not GolfWorld. I love GolfWorld for that reason. No useless tips.

Anyone outside of the U.S. subscribe to golf World? I want to but fear the magazine will always be coming in a week late for it to be really good. I've been toying with a subscription for a few years now but have always hesitated because of this.

Thats true, but its mostly because Golf World is a weekly (sort of) magazine that is mostly concerned with the TOURs and weekly tournaments.

Their sister publication, Golf Digest, is mostly the "rest" of golf: equipment, swing tips, travel, op-eds, etc... Golf Magazine is basically the equivalent of Golf Digest, and since they are owned by Sports Illustrated, if you get the optional SI Golf Plus section you can get something similar (sort of) to Golf World. FWIW i get Sports Illustrated Golf Plus, Golf World, and Golf Digest. SI for the other sports with the Golf Plus thrown in because it doesn't cost much, Golf Digest for the equipment/tips/op-ed (i don't know why, i just like to read it), and Golf World for the TOUR news. and stuff. Also I get GD and GW free from various purchases (Golf spikes, grips, practice mats, etc..) To be real though, everything in the magazines is free on their websites.

I currently get GD only because it's a yearly Christmas gift from my mother in law. I probably only read about 40% of the magazine because I find the rest of it rather boring. I do however look forward to their annual equipment review. It's probably the only issue that doesn't get thrown out right after I am done reading it.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
