I have been playing for about 9 month now. mostly just going to the range and work on some tips i saw online. my buddy of mine who is a 5 has been helping me with my swing lately so it has gotten better. I hope you guys can give me some tips and advice on what i need to work on and i really appreciated it. thanks!

Here is my swing with a 5 iron:

You are coming over the top. Which will normally result in your ball going right.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

I think maybe some of the reason that you come over the top is the little hip/lower body action that you have. You don't rotate your hips back, and then also don't rotate them forward.

Your shoulders look good, but your right elbow is disconnected. Next time you hit balls, try putting a glove or a headcover in your right armpit and try to swing without it falling out until the follow-torough.

The old glove under the armpit. I hear that drill used so much but have never done it. But then again i dont have any problems with backswing.(For now). Yea i realized the little to no hip rotation also. Turning your hips on your backswing may help with your club staying on plane and not come over the top.

Another thing that i noticed: you bow your wrists at the top of the backswing, this leads to the clubface being very open.

ah thanks for the replies. most of the shots tend to be hooks than slices. is there any good drill to prevent me from coming from the top? it seems like i am over swinging the club and my hands are too far above my head.

That is what a lack of lower-body movement will do.

I also noticed that the left-wrist bow is only on the PW shot not the 5i, so maybe you don't do it all of the time.

hmm is there any drills i can do to improve my lower body movement? and what is the correct lower body movement? now that u mentioned it, i do notice that my lower body did not rotate. i guess i have been focusing on my ubber body rotation too much.

3 flaws come to mind when I look at your swing, and they are three things that some of the players I teach at my local club do.The first thing that I recognize is that you are lifting the club, and not turning on the ball. You want to make sure that you rotate your hands, arms, and shoulders back together, which is known as the one-piece takeaway. Once you get to about hip high with the club, your lower body should start turning gradually, when you get to the top, your shoulders should be turned 90 degrees, and your left shoulder should be under your chin.

Since you are lifting in the backswing and not turning, you are not maintaining a proper spine angle. Having a proper spine angle is crucial, because if you do not keep your body at the same level throughout the golf swing, how you can hit quality golf shots on a consistent basis?

Finally, as some of the previous posts have indicated, you are coming over the top. This means that you are starting your downswing with your shoulders and arms, which is not what you want to do. Ideally speaking, you should start your downswing by rotating your left hip toward the target. This will allow the club to come into the ball on the correct swing plane and angle of attack, which will produce longer and straighter golf shots.

Your swing is actually pretty good considering you have only been playing for 9 months.

To be honest i really don't know of any. You just have to focus on it.

Thanks for all the help guys. i went to the range today and hit a bucket of balls with the glove under my right arm pit. but most of my shots tend to be thin or skulled shots, what should i do to fix that. another thing is that the glove falls out in the follow thru, i wonder if that's ok?

i will post some videos tomorrow after i come back from the range. hopefully we can see some improvements.

alright guys, i went to the range tonight and did the glove under the arm pit grill for a while. still skulling but not as much. i noticed from the video that i am still lifting, but could it be because my chin is too close to my chest? i am wearing my glasses and it's hard to see the ball unless i look down.

i tried to do more hip turns but i am having difficulty doing that, i just feel weird with my legs. maybe u guys can give me some tips on the proper way to do a hip turn. thanks!

anyways here are the videos.

Sorry if I/we confused you, the glove can fall out in the fallow through, it's mainly the backswing that is is meant to correct.

You are still coming over the top on the new swing. You definitely have to get your body active, as everyone has said.

I recommend you look up Shawn Clement on youtube, and listen to some of his lessons. They're very good, and easy to follow.

Good luck!

To many amatures think that they bring the club straight back and straight forward to hit the ball. That is not the case. I have been seeing alot of steep swings lately on alot of the critique my swing threads. Think as your swing like a circle around your body. Your ball is in the center of the circle. Your club goes around your body and up then down and around again. Your perfect impact zone is in the center of your circle where your club head is square at impact.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

ok guys, i took another video tonight when i went to the range. instead of lifting my club to start my back swing, i am now trying to rotate my shoulder and hips to the right to start the back swing. should i rotate my left shoulder down and to the right so it is pointing at the ball?

also i have been trying to rotate my hips first at the down swing and then bring the right elbow back to the body. and i read somewhere my first movie should be tilting my right shoulder down and thrust my left shoulder up at the same time. so i am a little bit confused on the down swing sequence.

i hope i have improved from the previous videos. please let me know. thanks guys! ehh i guess i love gray shirts.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
