Hey guys,

I live up in the cold north so i haven't touched a club in months. I'm really starting to get the itch.
I've been golfing for 3 years and i really struggle with inconsistency. I used to fight a slice which i've corrected but now i tend to push a lot of shots, i also tend to hit a lot of fat shots as well.

I took a couple of vids last summer.

Don't have face on view yet, i just purchased a new camera so i plan to take more vids this summer.

Any tips are welcome. Thanks.

my advice... move farther south. :) jk... at the top of your backswing, you seem to drift ever so slightly forward over the ball. this is making you come across it and slice it. for practice, you should hit some balls with your feet together with your knees bent more than they are and your back straight. this will a) balance you out, and b) get you to swinging from the inside. cause if you come out of it and go over the top, you will fall. when you do this, you should try to hit the ball on the hemisphere facing you. with your driver, hit in the lower half, and with everything else, hit on the upper half. mind you, these are just swing thoughts. so play around with them and see what you do. i like your separation and width on the backswing, so that's a positive. work on your consistency, and you'll be open for business.

At the top of the swing, your arms break down, the club sags way past parallel, and comes back over the top, and you start the ball left. This is a huge problem that must be addressed. When you get to the top of the swing, your arms must not break down like that. They must stay far away from your body so the club has a wide arc. With a narrow arc, the clubhead doesn't have as far of a distance to travel, so it can't accelerate up to speed.

You want your arms to be out straight like that.

Second issue is the downswing. Your hips must start the downswing by sliding or "bumping" forward. This forces the arms down and to hit the ball from the inside. You should feel your arms being sucked toward your right pocket as you thrust your hips. That's the second issue. Correct those two things, and you have a good solid swing to work with.

From what i can tell, your left arm looks fine, I can't 100% tell, but it looks fine (it should be straight). Your right arms is where the problem is. It collapses at the top and the 90* angle you want to create breaks down, that is why you go past parallel, or seem to from this angle.

I can't really tell where your hips are from this view, so i'm really going to comment on it. Yes you don want to move them forward, but you might be doing that, i can't tell.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
