Wasn't sure if I should stick this here or in the equipment forum.

I got a great deal on my irons, and I'm loving them... BUT I didn't exactly get the proper set. The way the Nickent 3DX-HI set is supposed to be put together, the ironwoods transition into the irons as follows: 15*, 17*, 22* (5i). When I received my set, however, they included a 3h and 4h 3DX DC. Thus, my lofts are: 20*(3h), 23*(4h), 22*(5i).

I'm not getting a great deal of difference between the 4h and the 5i. I'm wondering, should I pull the 4h and add a 2h or 5w? Or would the slot be better spent elsewhere?

Current Setup:

Driver
15* 3W
20* 3H
23* 4H
22* 5i
26* 6i
30* 7i
34* 8i
39* 9i
44* 10i
48* PW
52* GW
58* SW

As it stands, I don't really use either of the hybrids... I can get 185 out of my 5 iron and 200 and change with my 3w, so there never really seems to be a point to pulling the hybrids out of the bag. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

That is a fairly big gap you would leave between 5i and 3w... Do you find yourself not pulling the hybrids because you are more comfortable hitting the 3w off the deck?

I would drop the 5iron and leave the bag the way it is?

With a handicap of 36, I would not prioritize new clubs. Get some lessons instead, or buy a camera.

I don't know what the deal is, but your 5 iron is not even a 5 iron, it's a 3 1/2 iron. 22° could even be a full 3 iron. Why there's a 10 iron in the bag, who knows? So, what you have is a set with some phantom extra number thrown in. This is pretty strange to say the least.

The clubs should be marked: Driver 15* 3W Add: 18* 5W 20* 3H 23* 4H 22* get rid of it 26* 5i (6i) 30* 6i (7i) 34* 7i (8i) 39* 8i (9i) 44* 9i (10i) 48* PW 52* GW 58* SW You could remark them, or you could keep them as is. This will give you a good distance gap. Pull the 5 iron completely, it's just a 4 iron by another name. If you prefer it over the hybrid, keep the 22° club and drop the hybrid. I can't figure the logic of having a 10 iron in a bag, especially when it's just a 9 iron, and etc. for the rest of the set.

It's just Nickent trying to pretend their irons are magically longer than anyone else's irons.

And yes, I generally have more success with the 3w off the deck than the hybrids. Actually, I'd hate to pull the "5" iron, as it's been turning into a pretty reliable 185 for me. Looking at the loft progression, though, it does make sense.

As for 'As a 36, lessons lessons, etc'... I'm likely getting a good bit below a 36, but I haven't kept an official handicap and don't want to pull some number out of my butt (I'm starting to think I should just make an estimated handicap up. People pay more attention to that little number than much of what I say).

As for remarking the clubs... I don't understand that one. :D I know Nickent's 3DX-HI lofts are wonky, and that's why I included them. To be honest, it's a bit irritating to me that every time I mention an iron I have to add the disclaimer, "But it's not REALLY a five iron..." *laugh* Either way, writing 'Pitching Wedge' on the bottom of my ten iron doesn't change the distance from the green that makes me want to use it so that idea confuses me a bit.

It would just irritate me to have a "10" iron in the bag. 10 irons existed many years ago, but are not part of the modern set. Nickent isn't the only company that makes their clubs appear to be longer, Wilson's Di9s are so strong lofted, they have two gap wedges, and the new TaylorMades have a 45° pitching wedge.

I agree that it's a bit wonky, though when people ask and I say I hit ten iron... the looks are fairly amusing.

"10" seems like a bonus iron, but then there's still a GW. Confusing.

I have old 10-irons that are pitching wedges, sand wedges, and even a couple that are putters. As if golf isn't hard enough.

Was trying to answer a handful of posts in one while getting ready for work, so it looks like I missed the actual recommendation in the process. At this point, the 22 is a more reliable shot for me by far. Going that route, what would be a good way to make use of the empty slot? A 4w or 2h strikes me as a logical loft/length fit. (Either sound a bit atypical, but I'm carrying a ten iron so what do I care? :D)

You need a 5 wood. 18° would be your best option. You don't have anything that covers that region in your bag.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
