Can't decide: 3W or 4W

I just spent 2 weeks of hitting driver after driver, with assorted shafts on the LM. Now that I have picked the drive, I want to get either a 3W or 4W, but can't decide. Here's the info playing into my decision:

I just bought a G15 driver, 10.5*, with Serrano Stiff shaft (sweet club). I am looking at either the G15 15.5* 3W or the G15 17* 4W.

- I generally carry the driver 245 yards, with another 15 - 30 yards of roll, depending on varying fairway conditions.
- I believe my numbers on the 3W and 4W are as follows:
-----3W, 235 carry, up to 20 yards roll
-----4W, 220 carry, up to 15 yards roll
- I hit my 3i Adams A7 hybrid about 210 yards total
- the course I play most often will not really dictate either a 3W or 4W from the deck as the 2 par 5's are not reachable in 2, with either of these fairway woods.
- i will be hitting the FW wood off the tee about 3 or 4 times a round (at my course)

My gap I am trying to fill is between 210 and 265, the 4W fits in nicely (230-235 yards).

I am leaning toward the 4W, but just can't pull the trigger. Thoughts?

judging on the distances that you hit your 3i i might just get a 2i hybrid to replace the 3i and forget the 3w and 4w altogether, and maybe put another wedge in or something.

well my opinion is if your carrying four wedges and a 3-hybrid, throw the 4-wood in the bag.

4 times off the tee per round....I'd be leaning more toward 3-wood. I'd want to demo them to ensure I could hit the 3 off the deck with the ease of
the 4.

buy them both..... you will probably do it anyway.... Why not now instead of 3 months from now

well, the thought did cross my mind, buy the 3W (15.5*) and the 5W(18.5*). but then i wasn't sure how the 5W would compare to my 3 hybrid.

I left the 3 iron-hybrid slot open and opted for the 5 wood and an extra wedge. I found that with my medium swing speed there was a good bit of overlap at the longer end of the bag however the gaps do exhist at the short end. I can grip down on either fairway wood to cover shorter distances.

Why don't you see if they make a 4-Strong Wood in whatever models you're looking at?

I play a 3 wood, 5 wood and now a 4 hybrid. I had a 3 hybrid in the bag, but I found the yardage between the 5 wood and 3 hy were pretty similar.

I've actually been thinking about taking out the 3 wood and 5 wood for a 4-strong wood to free up a club.

I'd go fo a strong 4 maybe in the 16*-16.5* range with a 1/2" longer than standard shaft....that should fill the gap nicely.

But considering the amount of time off the tee you may be better off with the 3w. You can always choke down to adjust for the gap.

I have Driver, weak 3w, and 3h, and hit about 245, 225, 200. I know that I can choke down on any of these to bridge a gap. I also carry 4 wedges. I rather have better control on my short game than worry so much on the upper end, but that is just me. Actually my biggest problem is between my 3h an 4i/5i. I can't hit the 4i for anything!!!! and I hit my 5i about 170/175....that is were I have a hard time.....maybe it's time for 4h.... Granted my hc does not reflect yours, but I do obsess over this game, i just don't get enough playing time to bring it down!!!

Just wondering, I am also planning to get the Ping G15 but haven’t decided between the Serrano shaft and the TFC. I still need to hit both and get correct readings on launch monitor, but it seems most people are preferring the Serrano. I’m thinking the TFC might be better because I have a pretty low ball flight already.

Curious though, if I choose the TFC on the driver, should I stick with the same shaft on my fairway wood or do I need to hit both of these too? I’m also planning to buy the 4W G15.

I find the 4W easier to hit off the fairway and don’t lose much distance off the tee compared to the 3W…and I don’t need to buy two separate clubs 3W, 5W.

I have the 3h and 3wood in the bag 90% of the time. I have a 17* 4 wood with the shaft cut down to the length of a 2h that I swap in to replace the 3 wood for shorter courses. 1% of the time I put the 3, 4, hybrid and drop the lob wedge. I like the 4 wood cut down, better control and makes the distance between 3 wood and 4 wood bigger. Its great as a fairway/hybrid type club.

I am suprised by the size of the gap between 3w and 4w for you. Only 10-15 yards for most golfers I believe. Beyond gap I would also consider two elements of your playing style. If you hit 3w off the tee frequently, 3w might get the nod, also if you hit the 4w more consistently from the fairway or first cut, since that would be second club on short par 5 at other courses you might play, that would influence my decision also.
