I currently have an 80-85 mph swing speed and I am looking to increase that significantly. My current goal is a 95 mph average because I have been told that is what is recommended for stiff shafts. I am starting to lift weights and run and I was wondering if you guys had done anything specific to increase your swing speed. Thanks.

Interesting question. I would say that I have a 100 mph driver speed on average. We don't have any places to be tested on the island so I bought a swing speed radar. What I would like to know is how one time last summer when I was playing around I got a reading of 127MPH which I've never been able to reproduce. 117 once, but mostly 110-112 highest now. I was hitting into a net so I would hate to see where the ball would have gone, if I could find it.

Increasing clubhead speed means building your golf

power . Basic strength allows you to accomplish things physically, but strength enhanced for a particular athletic motion + speed = Power Titleist Performance Institute has a section on power drills (think of power as explosiveness): http://www.mytpi.com/mytpi05/Fitness/category.asp?id=71 The running is good - legs definitely give boost to power. Also, make sure you do flexibility training too. You can't swing with balance and extension if your shoulders and hips are stiff. Good thing about flexibility and stretch exercises: You can do a lot of them during the day when you have 15 minutes of quiet time; you don't have to be at the gym for an hour.

Many of the golf workout programs are based on core training and flexibility to increase swing speed. There are a gazillion books and tapes out now and I like the Mike Pedersen stuff personally. Keep up the cardio, and when lifting, stretch after everything to stay flexible and don't bulk up too much. "Golf power" is different than "world's strongest man power".

The big power accumulators in the swing are the core muscles. A good pivot, good hip slide/rotation will increase the speed.
