Hey guys,

I posted a couple weeks back about going and buying my first set of clubs, having limited experience of playing around 15-20 times in my life, but wanting to get a solid first set as I'm committed to learning this game and attempting to become as good as I can.

So here's what I came out of Golfsmith with:
Callway X-18's 4-SW with 1" extensions (I'm about 6'2-6'3")
Taylormade Burner Driver
Taylormade 15-deg. 3 Wood
Taylormade 19-deg. Hybrid
Oddessy 2-Ball Putter
A dozen Titlest NXT balls

As you can see, I only got set up with 12 clubs. I was told not to bother with the Lob Wedge at this point. I also signed up for lessons with one of the pros there, set to start next week. I was also told that as ffar as fitting goes, the length was important, but until I'd played more and developed a more consistent swing (through said lessons), not to worry about loft, lie angles, etc. at this point. Does it look to you guys, based on my experience level and intentions, that I did ok here? I just wanted to get your opinions. All is appreciated.

Guess not

We can't answer for you. If you're happy with what you bought, you did well.

Looks excellent to me. As stated you will know more later but you've purchased quality. The lesson are a good idea.

Word of warning ---now that you've purchased your first golf clubs welcome to the world of searching for perfection. So many flavors of golf clubs and so little time to own them all!!!!!!!

Good luck and looking forward to YOUR impressions of your FIRST set.

Hey you did great for a starter set....the Burner driver is very forgiving. At this point don't worry too much about lofts, and angles, and tha t stuff. Just have fun playing, once you understand what your are or are not doing, will figure out what is the best set of clubs for you.

What's important now is that you enjoy the game, with your own set of clubs.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

Next time buy blades instead of performance enhancement equipment. Then you'll really do yourself a favor by having to hit the ball near perfectly.

I appreciate all the thoughts, guys. Should I just stick with the 12 clubs I have now? Or should I add 2 (to get to the 14 max) and if so, which ones? Another hybrid (22*?)? A Lob Wedge? I'm definitely new to the game, but I really, really am falling in love with it and want to dive right in.

    • Take this with a grain of salt but, when I see high speed/high leverage freewheeling swings like yours (from your swing video), it makes me think that considering the combo of outward and downward pressure required, you might not be applying sufficient downward pressure through impact. Tendency is more out than down. A good analogy is keeping an inflated ball pushed down underwater in a pool. I think it is the hardest force/pressure component to master.  It's a guess. I also think back pain is a symptom, theoretically speaking.
    • Heron Ridge in Virginia Beach yesterday, hole #7 for those in the area.  Would this box be considered an immovable obstruction with free relief?  (It was in my back swing as the hole was to the left of my ball in the picture.)  You can see that it sits just off the cart path.  How about all the mud and tire tracks?  When I addressed the ball my feet were sinking in wet mud so I took relief for standing water.  Right or wrong?  Thoughts?

    • Fair enough but I think a firm message was warranted here. Having said that I hope the that the phone was returned later  I would think it was.
    • Not sure how I feel about that. Heckling is always been part of sports and a professional athlete should be able to ignore comments and continue on with their play.  Having said that, historically golf has a higher standard of etiquette. I agree with you that fans who are a problem shouldn’t be tolerated. I think should be removed from the premises in hopes to discourage behavior, but I’m not sure I can justify Rory taking the guys phone from him.
