Hi guys

Im desperate for some advice as im cracking myself up with this problem! Im wanting to know the correct position for the right hand holding the club?? Do i need to focus on getting it more over or under the grip? And finally the position of the trigger finger, does it need to be flush against the middle finger and does the thumb need to lie across the top of grip?

Sorry for the million and one questions!!!

Thanks

Hi guys

I was always taught 3 things for the grip:

1.the palms should face each other (ie left strong, right weak,,,they are in conflict and will impede the wrist hinge) 2.you shouldn't see any grip through your fingers 3.more grip in the fingers the better From there on it gets personal...overlap, interlock, ten finger, trigger finger no trigger finger, strong grip, weak grip...all that is up to the player.

3.more grip in the fingers the better

I used to believe this also, but you can grip the club too much in the fingers (especially in the left hand---for a righty)

I now grip the club with my left hand so that the butt of the club sits in the hypothenar eminence--feels much more one unit, more in control throughout the swing. Then place the right hand over the left thumb, so that the lifeline of the right hand covers the left thumb closely (without a gap) and the Vs are aligned see link (has video) http://video.about.com/golf/Grip-a-G...-Correctly.htm

Hi guys

There is usually a gap between the trigger finger and the middle finger.

The right hand will be more under for a strong grip, and on top for a weak grip. So it depends on your grip preference. As mentioned, having the palms facing eachother is recommended. I wouldn't go crazy trying to get your grip "perfect"...people play good golf with all kinds of grip variations.

I'd like to bring this thread back to life. The role of the right hand on the grip is also perplexing to me. I've been told that the right should face the target, but with my strong overlap grip, there's no way my right hand can face the target, it ends up underneath the club more. If I interlock, I can get the right hand facing the target, but the palms aren't facing each other.
??????

My left hand is similar to the diagram above, with the butt of the club under the hypothenar. I bring in my right hand from the side and the thumb of my left hand fits on the lifeline of my right hand.

I have some trouble at times as well. it feels like my right hand is reaching under the club (and thus facing up at times).. does this make it strong or weak?

also, it's not everyday you get to use the word "hypothenar eminence" in a sentence :)

Ben Hogan taught that only two fingers of the right hand "hold" the club. Your middle and ring fingers. Your right pinky, index, and thumb are superfluous.

Dead on.....I have calluses on my right middle and ring finger on the first inner-pad of each finger....If I am holding the club straight out in front of me (parallel to the ground with the toe pointing up), the first inner-pad of my ring and middle finger will be directly under the club supporting most of the weight of the club....

There are as many unique grips as there are swings. Put yours hands on the club in the most comfortable way that allows you to use the tool. After all you wouldn't need a lesson to show you how to hold a sledge hammer, broom, shovel, scalpel, steering wheel, etc. Good luck dude. GDIB

I respectfully disagree. The grip is the very first and most important fundamental of the golf swing. After all the club is an extension of your hands, and all the correct planes, straight arms, hip moves, and rotation means nothing if it is not getting to the club because of a poor grip.

And have you ever swung a sledge hammer? There is definitely a right way and wrong way to do it, bust up a few concrete patios and you learn quickly....

No it's not. Look at major champions through history. Some gripped the club tightly. Others loosely. Some had incredibly strong grips, others incredibly weak grips.

Very, very, very few of the "fundamentals" are consistent among the major championship winners, and grip is one of the LEAST consistent. You know what the major champions do best? They hit the ball first. They hit the ball far. They control the curve of their ball. Those are the fundamentals. The specifics of how you do that are slightly different for everyone. So, yeah, I disagree that "grip" is a fundamental. If it was, well, we'd see some commonality among the best players. We don't, except for the obvious stuff like "not gripped way into the palm." That's about it...

I grip the club wth my rght hand, very much like I'd grip a pistol. Or maybe a small flat stone before skipping it accross water.
