i need some help on the mental part of golf. I cant keep my mind on the game when im out there. If i say have a birdie on one hole, 9/10 times i will follow that up with a bogey or a double... And i also cant keep my swing tempo good. I have noticed when i shoot say 75 or sumthing, my swing tempo is awesome. Help please?

The few times I shot in the 70s my swing tempo felt awesome too.

Unless your name is Tiger Woods, you are forgiven for having some mental lapses during a round of golf at the age of 15. (And for all his mental toughness look how Tiger is doing now ).

But really, I would say just don't put any pressure on yourself to shoot a certain score. You know you are capable of shooting 75 or even lower, so just play with no fear and no expectations.

Interesting though, I heard Ogilvy went through a time when he was really harsh with himself-- negative and sarcastic after every bad shot. Guess he had to learn some emotional control, and I'm sure it improved his game.

Mental game: develop the habit of moving on from the shot you just hit as soon as you see where it ends up. Start thinking immediately about what you're going to do with the next one. The shot you just hit or the hole you just played is over, so, good or bad, let it go. This habit, when mastered, will have your mind moving in the right direction, and that's forward. The only thing your mind should be on is what you're going to do right now. This is a difficult skill to develop, but it's a critical one. It takes as much work as the development of any shot technique. But it will be the most valuable mental skill you have, especially under pressure.

Tempo: Get a metronome. Use a four-count rhythm, counting 1 when the swing starts, 2, then 3 at the top of the backswing, and 4 back down at impact. Move the tempo setting until you find which one delivers your awesome tempo. Now you know. Practice several times a week, counting to the metronome at that setting, to build that feeling into your head.

Most of us share your same problem with staying focused and consistent throughout the round of golf, I know that I have experienced this many time. I am not really sure what the solution is for you but what I try to do is make sure that I have a pre-shot routine that I stick with, also focus on my back swing and direction of where I take the club back. I also take full swing to make sure it the right tempo swing I want to make.

My son is playing matches in high school and I am sure that the pressure of competition is there for him, hopefully his years of playing in basketball tournaments will help him stay relaxed. I play match play with my golf buddies and the slight level of pressure on the golf course might be good for you to feel each time you play. Have small matches with your buddies and experience the competition and pressures to perform in situation where you need to get up and down to save par to stay even or to win the hole.
