I'm interested in buying some Mizuno MX 950 3-pw steel stiff. The specs show that the shaft options for T. Temper Dynalite Gold Superlite (R300/ S300) are:

R 300 flex... 102 grams ...High Ball Flight...Tip 0.355...Butt...0.600
S 300 flex... 103 grams ...High Ball Flight...Tip 0.355...Butt...0.600

That doesn't seem like a whole lot of difference between stiff or regular shafts. Is there a major difference in something else that I'm just not seeing (like kick point)? I don't even know what "kick point" is, really, but I thought I'd ask.

kickpoint determines the flight of the ball.. high kick points = low ball flight. low kp = high ball flight.
your swing speed determines if you should be swinging a stiff or regular flex shaft.
if you're swinging in the 70's...then stick with regular flex.. if you're in the 80's then you can go with stiff.
and this is SS with irons...not with driver.

Thanks DJYoshi. That answers part II of my question. Now what's the major difference between R300 flex...102 grams and
S300 flex...103 grams. I swing in the 80s-90s on simulator.

The heavier the shaft, the lower the swingspeed. But, if the shaft is too light, control may be a problem.

Shaft weight becomes critical within a particular shaft flex.
* Dynamic Gold S300 averages 127 grams in weight
* Dynamic Gold S300 SL (superlight) averages 106 grams in weight

Both Dynamic Golds above have a high kickpoint (encourages lower ball flight)

So, if you're on the line between Regular and Stiff, the DG S300 SL might be the way to go.
................
If you need a higher ball flight, the Dynalites with the lower kick point would come into play.

I appreciate both replies, but I should have just got right to the point. Could there be that much of a difference between 103 grams (R300) and 104 grams (S300) when it comes to flex? It seems like it doesn't matter what shaft I buy, because I don't see how only 1 gram will change a steel flex from regular to stiff. Thanks.

The weight doesn't cause the flex. The shaft has several properties, one of which is the flex, another is the weight.

By the way, you listed your speed but not which club. 80s with a driver is very different from 80s with a 7-iron. Which club are you using when you're measured?

The weight doesn't have anything to do with the stiffness. The step pattern is different on the two which results in the stiff being stiffer than the regular.

My simulator speed was anywhere from low 80s to mid 90s with a steel stiff 7irons and high 80s to high 90s (even some mid 100s) with a 3 graphite stiff hybrid. Thanks guys.

I have these shafts on my irons. A little bit heavy for me. The low kick point does not cause the ball too high, at least for myself. The trajectory is as average as my previous irons with other shafts.

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
