today was our first golf meet, im a junior in highschool and we were going up against one of the best teams in the state. I was the one seed for my team so i was golfing with the other teams number one. Every shot with his iron was dead straight and it looked effortless. Hes 180 out and he can put it within 15 feet of the hole about every time.

And then you look at my iron shots. I dont know what it is, im just not consistent. Very rarley do i get a great iron shot. None are really horrible but very rarely from 75 yards and out do i put it within 10-15 feet

Other than just hitting a bunch of iron shots what can i change/do to have me be more consistent

Just make sure fundamentals such as alignment and posture are always correct. If not, even if you make a perfect swing you may hit an errant shot.
Hope this helps,

we can't really tell you much unless you post your swing. see if one of your buddies will do it for you at practice tomorrow.

next time you have the opportunity ask the player who is so consistent what he did to reach that level of play. You might be suprise that he will answer your question sincerely. What do the pros do to get so good? I think that its an understanding of your golf swing and knowing what causes your ball flight and direction. Its also inspiring to see someone play so well and effortlessly especially since it makes you stride to be just as good.

Just make sure fundamentals such as alignment and posture are always correct. If not, even if you make a perfect swing you may hit an errant shot.

The problem with that advice is that those aren't fundamentals. We see successful golfers at every level with all sorts of alignments, postures, and grips. I could cite examples of everything on both ends of the spectrum, all guys who have won majors... That's not something they've had in common. There's a range for what's acceptable, but it's broader than you seem to think.

The true fundamentals are hitting the ball and then the ground, hitting from the inside (even if you're going to fade the ball), and so on. It may be easier to get to those points if you have a "standard" grip, posture, and alignment, but that varies by the individual. To the OP, put your swing on video and identify the one thing you can fix first. If you're right, fix it and focus on that as your swing thought. You will get better if you choose properly and work properly.

Looks like you got psyched out a bit. Don't worry about what the other person does, if he keeps hitting to 15 feet, he still has to make the putt. If you are inconsistant in the irons, work alot on your short game. especially pitch shots. That contact will help you win your iron game as well, getting that feel of compressing the ball. Then when you hit a chip shot to inside 2 feet, that will drive him nuts, because he now knows he has to make those 15 footers to get ahead of you. A good shortgame can conguer a good iron game.

The only thing bad about that is if his putter is on. That is impossible to beat if you go up againts a guy who can drain them from anywere.

Only one word - practice. Doesn't matter what you do as long as you can do it every time. I'm afraid there's no other way.

Also - it might be a hit to your ego but try to get used to only hitting your irons 80%. You should find it much easier to control your point of contact and develop that 'effortless' look without sacrificing much distance. Trying to kill the ball all the time is a leading cause of inconsistency.

Ahmen to that. There is no significant loss if you swing at 80% than 100%. I actually find i can hit balls more consistant and constinantly at that same distance each time. If you go 100%, then you might hit the toe, or the heel and not get your yardages to go.

Your local course should have someone on staff certified by the PGA ask the folks for a couple of lessons. Having someone qualified spend even 30 miutes with you will really help.

i think one thing that i need to do is hit down on the ball. one question i do have about that is will you ball flight be lower? because whenever i try to hit down the ball goes just as high. Maybe im nt doing it right.

and ther other main things i think are keeping my head still and my spine angle the same. When i taped my driver swing the other day, it just looked like my upper body was everywhere

how could i work on those things? would swinging while trying to balance something on my head work? for keeping my head still

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛
    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
